Ok, guys:

I ain't the sharpest tool in the shed most of the time but I can figure my way through most things most of the time.

I replaced all 4 brake shoes last night with after market made to OEM spec's. I will say this...I don't know if Yanmar brakes fit without any mods but the after markets ones needed a fair amount of grinding and sanding to get them to fit!

Talk about "takin' one for the team" I think playing chicken in traffic would have been more fun!

First, the metal ends are just a little wide and a little too long to fit in the cam studs (or what ever you call them), got out the grinder and fixed that problem. to wide and they won't fit and too long and you can't get the springs back on.

Second, I had to sand the pads to get them to fit back into the brake drums. Talk about a tight fit, when I would get one side done I would fire up the little beast and have to drive it back and forth in the alleyway in the barn to get the wheel rollin'.

On the second wheel I gave up on trying to get the spring under the brake pads and put them on the outside (other side from the cover) if that makes and since....seems to work fine at this point, trying to streach that little spring under the pad with neddle nose pliers and get the end up through the hole was driving me whack-a-do!

Anywho.....it's done and I have brakes on the little beast again after many years without brakes....sweet!

I put the springs on the shoes first, and then work them onto the housing plate.

jimstractors:

Just for the sake of making me feel even more stupid....how? I did the spring first with half of two pads inside and half outside and of course I can slide one end on but the spring is in the was on the other side.....and I tried comming down over the top of the retaining studs but I was having a hard time getting over the retaining washer that sits on top of the retaining studs and the spring would shoot off.

It could be that the ends of the aftermarket pads are just a little bit on the long side.......

I went out to the barn at 7:00 or so and came back in around 10:30 done but rattled and pissed...and I thought "no problem an hour and I'm done.... /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif
