Has anyone tried replacing the wide middle-buster shank with a narrow sub-soiler point? I need to break up a section of rock-hard red clay next weekend and hoped to save buying yet another attachment for this job alone.

thanks!

Not sure if this is the same application, but I purchased a 24" piece of 3/4" X 2 1/2" flat bar that I tooled and installed into my center scarifier hole on my box blade.
It did a good job of tearing up some heavy soil and tree roots so I could bury an electric line.

Sure have, I swap between the middle buster shovel and a 2 1/2" wide subsoiler point regularly. Don't know the bolt arrangement on yours but mine takes most common points and sweeps for S-tine cultivators also. I haven't found a need for any of them but they do fit!

Hope this helps!

I'll try and snap a photo tonight. I'm not sure where to buy these points either. There aren't any TSC or farm equipment stores where I live.

There are other places online but these folks have a good selection, good prices, and fast reasonable shipping. The search function is all but useless thought.

I don't own a middle buster tip, but only have a subsoiler tip on mine. I used mine behind a 100 hp tractor ripping up an area I was clearing. Unfortunately I hit a buried rock and snapped the tip right off. My subsoiler was made in the 40's and parts aren't exactly available. I bought a couple of replacement scarifiers for a box scraper and used 3 3/4 grade 8 bolts bolting one on. (I didn't want to weld it on just in case it didn't work right)

The first time out I twisted that scarifier into a pretzel. An old farmer by me told me to take my good one, heat it up a bit with a rosebud torch and dip it in used motor oil; repeat several cycles. Now make sure you don't get too hot and that you have someone close with a fire extinguisher in case you start the used motor oil on fire. I did a couple of times, but it was a weak fire and easy to put out. Anyway, after a few cycles of doing that I hardened the cheap tip to the point where it worked great. He told me that what I did was a poor mans version of making high carbon hardened steel out of mild steel. I dunno, but it did work. Good luck!

Try a cultivator point shank. I bought one from TSC and the holes matched.
I used plow bolts, again from TSC,to fasten the the shank point.
Easy! ;)

I have one of those KK middle buster/subsoiler combos from Tractor Supply.

I bought a sweep from Agri-Supply and it fits the KK frame no problem

Measure the hole pattern on your middlebuster frame and call Agri-Supply to see if they have a subsoiler that matches.
