Yanmar 1300D Red Hood
Hi All,

I recently bought a Yanmar 1300D (4x4) red hood with a broken sector shaft (two interior gears are sheared off, see attached pics) thinking it would be a simple enough part to replace.... I was sorely mistaken! Would really appreciate any suggestions/insights others with more experience might have to offer.

Basic issue: Several tractor part companies offer a "replacement" sector shaft for the stated model of my tractor, which look very similar, but the shaft that they stock is narrower in diameter than the one that broke on my tractor. They suggested that perhaps since it is a 4x4 that it was manufactured with a heftier shaft. I cannot seem to find a premanufactured shaft, even from other make/models, that have same dimensions.

Any suggestions on where else to check and/or has anyone successfully swapped out the whole steering box on this model with a steering box from another make/model? If so, what did you use? In addition to pics of the broken shaft, I also attached a dimensioned sketch, for what it's worth.

Companies that I have contacted with no success in finding a matching part:
Hoye
Southern Farm Equipment (awaiting response)
Fredricks Equipment
Mid West Steering
Broken Tractor
Steiner

I really like your drawing. :)

As for the dimensions, Yanmar did/does everything in METRIC. And most machine shops can do CNC metric really easy too.

Here's our parts suppliers on the Yanmar Tractor owners Group. You've nailed a few of them already. And I'm going to need to update Winston's find to the list too. ;)

Thanks, Winston! I'll give them a try. TBH, it looks like the same one listed on other sites, with the usual list of compatible model numbers. I think the issue is the 1300 Red is listed, but not the 1300D (and it's my understanding from this new world of Yanmar language I'm learning that "D" stands for 4x4 - which might be part of the problem I'm having, no one seems to list parts for the 4x4 model). But please correct me if I'm wrong on the "D" interpretation!

Bmaverick, thanks for the list! There's a few on there I haven't stumbled on yet, so I'll give them a try. One company wanted me to ship them the old part so they could try to match it to something they had on shelf and I was like ummmm, how about a drawing instead? I don't care if a drawing gets lost! lol. See my response to Winston's comment. Does any of that make sense regarding the "D" model? I'm still learning the ins-n-outs of vintage Yanmar.

Generally, except for the front axle and transmission output, the 'D' (4x4) versions are identical in nearly everything. Your steering box might be unique - but I doubt it.

California, thanks for the clarification. If that's the case, then I don't know what the heck is going on. Maybe a prior owner swapped out the steering box at some point?

Could be a Frankensteinmar. A unique tractor assembled from whatever was in the bin that a VN refurb factory bought from a scrapyard. With a few components made by by a kid who was handed a file and told he has a week to fabricate an unobtainable part.

Ok, that's worst case. More likely, if that steering box never appears in the YM1300 Parts Manual then it came off a very similar Yanmar and can be replaced when you figure out what it came from.

Worst (most expensive) case, there are CNC shops that can fabricate anything.

She's a Beauty!! This tractor may be #1 worst deal ever for a Yanmar.............. He may part it up and get 1/3 of that asking price. Then you actually look at the steering wheel and that might be doubtful. SMDH.

Pulled it back up and took a good look at it on my last reply. And really the only reason I mentioned it was i never heard of that part being a very common problem so it maybe good . New it was rough is why I mentioned the price. Not much there. Hard parts since everything else has been BTH. and back......

Hey kmh234!

There's your steering box, complete, right there!

Take a trailer. There might even be other usable parts.
As tempting as that is, I live in northern california. Kind of a long drive! Maybe I'll call the guy and see if he'd be willing to part it out.... never hurts to ask.

Another long shot to try: When I replaced the steering box on my prior YM186D I googled a casting # I saw on the side of the box and found mention of it in a forum where someone was restoring a Datsun 240Z. The trademark logo on my box matched his. So Yanmar must have been using a generic steering box supplied to Japanese car manufacturers as well. Going down that rabbithole might take a lot of investigation. I ended up buying a rebuilt steering box from Hoye.

PM sent, re a scrapyard that said he is now out of business. He would have had a steering box. If you get a useful reply from him, who he sold his inventory to or something, please post it here.

Thanks for all the great information! I'll check out the 240Z option.

Also, for anyone interested in the CL ad lead, we called the guy and he was willing to sell the steering box for the asking price of the tractor... so probably a no-go, but that'd be a great parts tractor for someone who lives closer to the guy!

That things local and real close. There's 2 Fredrick supplied dealers 30 min. from there. Been on CL. a month or so. It's not going anywhere. 750 for the steering plus shipping.🤐 One reason I jumped on my Ym2000 was the American model basically and parts avail. It was in such good condition Spalding kept it Org. UTDA back then even... I still chuckle to the day when I asked steve were he got it. Mumbled a little but really wouldn't say. I handed him a Chk. for his asking price no Negotiation........... knowing what I gave for it from a dealer that 750 is insane. Not going anywhere. Not even to Ca..........
