I have a 25 ton Speeco that I am overall happy with. But pulling on the pull cord has gotten old, and the engine has seen more reliable days. I would like to start fresh with an electric start. It has a B&S 10.5 I/C engine on it now vertical shaft.
Any suggestions of a good replacement with electric start and maybe even an attached fuel tank that won't break the bank? This is a fairly low use splitter.

Pretty slick. The engine isn't great otherwise either. Previous owner may not have taken as good of care of it as maybe he should have.
I see surplus center has the same engine with a starter but without fuel tank or muffler. I thought about a knock off engine to save some bucks. But I'm also getting tired of equipment that doesn't function when you need it to.

What's your budget? What "breaks the bank" varies considerably from person to person. I'm a Honda GX fan, so that's what I'd be looking for and I'd be switching to horizontal shaft, but that's just me. Easiest would be to just get another vertical shaft B&S.

I have the exact same splitter and it has ALWAYS been a reliable start with 1 to 3 pulls.

In my experience, it's always proven to be cheaper to buy it new the way you want it, then to try and modify it to be better then how it was originally built. Not even factoring in the time it takes do do this, just buying all the a parts needed has proven this to me over and over again.

I agree. The more modifications you need to make later, the more mistakes will be done. I should add that I've had good luck ordering stuff from Surplus Center.

If it doesn't start good, replace the sparkplug, adjust the valves, and have someone that knows what they are doing check all passages in the carb.
