Hi

I broke the plastic chain brake handle. Is this as simple as swapping it out or will it activate the brake when I unscrew it? Will I need any special tools or knowledge if the brake shifts while changing the plastic part? Any help would be appreciated.

When you broke it did it end up in the brake locked position? That is the hard thing to undo without the whole handle to provide the leverage. If it's unlocked so the saw can spin the chain it shouldn't be a problem. How did you break it to begin with?

Yes it did but I managed to unlock by prying up on the remaining stub with my spark plug wrench. The chain spins freely. It broke when my Mrs. backed our wood trailer into it. I should have been more careful where I left it as I was the one who told her where to park the trailer.

Chain brake on my 455 gave up the ghost long ago. I just left it out because it was not cheap to replace.

You should just be able to remove the handle and replace it. Fairly easy proposition if you're handy at all. If not, see a dealer. I would advise against running it without the brake, it's there for a good reason.

I only have one saw with a chainbrake, and I dont run it that much. I personally feel that the (mostly flase) sense of safety the brake gives you makes you more slack in safety. I always find my sef taking fewer shortcuts running the old pioneers.... I guess the thought of you having nothing to stop it if something goes wrong makes you automatically work safer...

Of course, if you dont run a saw much, I highly recomend one...

I guess what Im saying is that although I wouldnt remove a working one, I wouldnt rush to fix a broken one...
