1978 Massey 20C w/Perkins diesel
Hi guys,

I'll try to keep this simple but hoping someone who is knowledgeable about pumps can explain this...

- My tractor (1978 20C) has a MK2 hydraulic pump with the rear facing relief. I confirmed this visually.

- My parts manual says an alternate pump is the MK3 with the relief mounted horizontally to a block on the housing. It clearly states NO pressure control. It also supposedly takes a slightly shorter standpipe due the mounting block height.

- I ordered the 1661616M94 MK3 pump from a supplier and what showed up appears to be a MK3 pump WITH pressure control. I have included a pic below, can someone confirm?

- I called around about this 1661616M91/4 and nobody who stocks these seems to even know what they are selling and all the pics for this part number online seem to show pressure control pumps!

- I thought maybe they could just send me the correct mounting block and Ill swap but it out but the sellers I've talked to have no idea what I'm talking about

Thanks in advance for any info!!!!

Drew

My advice. Return the pump, even if you have to pay the freight. You don't want a pump with pressure control. Just order a rebuild kit and keep your existing pump. You might want to replace the relief valve as well. I've seen a few reliefs stick shut and bust the lift cylinders right off the housing. Makes a mess. Then again, with new replacement parts you're always taking a gamble. Judgement call there.

Rebuild kits are easy to find, not very expensive, and fit fifty different pump numbers. They're pretty much all the same inside. That's the way I go.

What was the problem with your pump?

Ok so you are confirming that's pressure control im looking at?

I can get the pump returned for free due the listing clearly stating is for a non-pressure contorl tractor. I wont have to eat the cost of return shipping.

It's a long story but basically the 3pt functionality was really jerky. Looks like water was previously in the axle. My plan was to rebuild the stock pump over winter but wanted to source something now to get it back running. I really don't have a clean enough area and time to deep dive into the pump rebuild at the moment.

I did look at rebuild kids and they still appeared to be a few hundred bucks anyway, no?

Thanks for the feedback.

The pump in your photo has pressure control which you do NOT want. Your original pump does not have that. The reason I don't go with replacement pumps is simple. They are all basically the same pump as far as the internals are concerned. That's why they all use the same kit. Different part numbers come with slightly different shaft lengths, spline counts, end cap castings, control valve linkages, all sorts of stuff. You can put a kit in your pump in less time than it will take you to find the exact replacement.

Oh, ok. I was looking for a rebuild kit specific to mk2 pumps like my original. I thought I read that the Mk1, Mk2 and Mk3 pumps have different size pistons or something.

Thanks,

Kits come with pistons and matching chambers. One size fits all.
