I am thinking about a retirement business and am trying to find the best mini excavator to use. Will use it for water, sewer and underground electric ditching. Maybe some building footings or landscaping. I want it small enough to haul easily with my 3/4 ton chevy. I really would like to have a good used machine. I think the 3 to 5 ton size may be best. Any suggestions on size, make and modle?

Five tons translates to 10,000 lbs. + 3,000 lbs. for an adequate trailer = 13,000 lbs. = too much for a 3/4 ton truck - period.
I rent a Takeuchi TB135 (highly recommended) and pull it with my F-350 dually easily and safely. I also have a 14,000 lb. GVW trailer with brakes on both axles.

Alternatively, my Cat 303C CR weighs about 7700 lbs, which if you allow 4000 lbs for trailer, tiedowns, etc, is only 11,700 lbs, well within Ford's limits for my F250.

I see that owners of Kubota minis are very happy with their machines as well.
