One powerful thing the market has going for it is the number of very wealthy people who are invested in it and want it to be profitable. If you are in the market, no matter how much, those people are working politically and from the business side for your benefit.

There will up and downs and the occasional disaster, but there is a pile of money and power pushing in a profitable direction.

Those with money make it going DOWN as well as UP. Most retail people are "long" investors and get slaughtered when markets go down.

Don't sell raisins short until you have tried this: Trockenbeerenauslese - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I saw a bottle in a beer/wine store in Boone. It was sitting way up high, almost out of reach, so I reached.:laughing::laughing: I saw the price tag so I CAREFULLY placed the bottle way up high and slowly, carefully, backed away. :D:D:D I have read of the wine and I want to try it but not at that price. I certainly don't want to knock over the bottle!:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Dan

At one time, most men were honest and gave their word, only when they meant it. Under those circumstances, capitalism was a great thing. I have no idea what would be better, but folks in high places are no longer honest.

Time was, if a banker could not meet the obigations of his depositers, he was likely to jump from a building or bridge.

Now, if they can cheat, lie and walk away with more money, they laugh.

I still wish they would jump!

Now, the bankers are gov't sponsored and able to hold citizens hostage for ransom...

Don't get me started on that topic :)

Oh, and if you are counting on your tax-deferred retirement account to be your main source of income, be aware that the gov't has talked about (and it is highly speculated by those I read) that they will take over them (after all, they are tax-deferred and the gov't considers them "touchable") and force investments into government debt such as treasuries....

If this does happen, more than likely, the money invested will be gobbled up by inflation and your once "ample" amount of money will only be able to buy half the goods it once could.

Just a hunch....stay on your toes and be nimble (if possible). I'm 30 and have stopped contributing to a tax-deferred retirement plan. I have even come a gnat's azz away from cashing it out and eating the penalty just to get "out of the system" so to say. What is going on in Cyprus and the EU will come to the shores of the USA in some form or another....This ain't your granddaddy's world/USA any longer.

I truly wish I could say this post was hogwash but my research, world trends and gut felling forces me to be in agreement with its content at least in general sense. The details may be unknown today but we all know the end results.

The deferred taxes are out of the reach of the spenders of tax dollars today and they are not happy about that.

The Western World banks/gov'ts have run out of money and are looking at any and all avenues of obtaining more including, but not limited to, printing up Mo' Money!

I had to check Google Maps and yes it was Peabody's!:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Next time I am in Boone I will stop by and mention your name.

schools, funny (not really!!), but about 20 years ago I heard a radio host saying the same thing you said - gubmint could and probably will, figure out some way to get into our retirement money! He got my attention, and now, we are seeing that happen in Greece. At least, they are talking about it... Hep us, hep us all.

If you can't immediately touch/hold it, you don't own it...

Funny SouthPark clip from an episode a few years back...one of the all-time classics. Does have foreign subtitles, though.

Since the great majority of money hidden away in Cyprus was "gained" by questionable means, and likely little or no tax was paid on it, this
confiscatory policy may have some credibility on this island, but would create a revolt in most other places. Cayman Islands and all the other tax
havens are in the same boat. I bet there's a lot of money being wired around from bank to bank right now. Lot of worried crooks.

but the idea of seizing your assets without due process is really worrisome. Of course the IRS is very good at that, but at least there was a process available, a day in
court. If the source of the funds in the accounts came from within the island/country, seizing any of that money, which likely has been taxed a few times already,
is just like the feudal lord riding onto your property and hauling a third of your grain home with him.

Sooner or later the serfs rise up and things get nasty.
