Went in this afternoon and gave my notice. I am officially retired, quit, gone by-by, riding off into the sunset on March 15, 2011. I have enough vacation to not work any after Saturday March 5th. Wish me luck.

I decided not to stay until the plant closes (see two threads below) because of the low severance pay offered ( I only have three and a half years service ) and the low unemployment benifit in Tennessee. I did my usual spreadsheet to see the figures and if I worked until December, got my severance, and drew the unemployment for 84 months it would make less than 3% difference in my retirement IF I lived another thirty years.

What !!!!

Are all of you laughing at me ??

Doesn't everybody check out the actuary charts and see how long they can expect to live before making life changing decisions ?

Anyway I have been thru a large plant closing before and I don't want to go thru it again. I have enough chores around here to keep me busy for at least two years before I start looking for some kind of work.

Now I gotta go buy that tractor I have been looking for the past three years.

Congrats. Totally, a personal decision based on what YOU know.:thumbsup:

I've enjoyed the other related threads.

Check the charts? Sure. But now that I'm 64, I have to admit being just past middle age (60 is middle of 120) and those numbers keep getting smaller.

I retired officially in '93, 19 years next week. At the time I wasn't ready to retire retire and exist on retirement income, but I have these last 5 years. Now the funny part about that is if anyone had asked me to project where I'd be and what I'd be doing 19 years ago, anything I said wouldn't be close to today's reality. Life is kinda funny that way. I am hoping that the end of next 19 years finds me here, doing as I'm doing, but who knows.:laughing::laughing:

Best of luck and long long happy life

Right now I am at home recovering from cancer surgery; I plan to return to work in April. I don't know as yet how I will feel at that time and I'll need medical to approve my return. It's hard to give up a fat income and all that it buys, weighing that against living like Peter Pan.

My options are:

A] Return to work an additional 3 years to make my full 25 years, with full pension.

B] Return to work and complete the year making 23 years at a slightly reduced pension.

C] Return to work and complete the year as a part timer making 23 years at a slightly reduced pension.

D] Return to work for a few months until a replacement can be found.

I retired officially in '93, 19 years next week.

22 years ago last month for me. I took a slight reduction in pension to leave a little early, and of course worked a few part time jobs after retirement, but nothing at all in the last 8 years.

Congratulations. I'm just celebrating 4 years at the end of this month. It is a great feeling to have the security of a known income for life, whether you decide to work again or not.

I got tired of fighting budgets and silly dept. rules, so i retired at 61, i am now 69 and have enjoyed all of the time here. We sold our home in So Cal on a 7000 sq. ft. lot and found our way to the Missouri Ozarks and a place on a creek. We are very happy here. Good luck and many happy years.........
