If you agree with HJC's thought process, stay in Greenville and the surrounding suburban areas. There's a reason people move from the North to the South, and a lot of it has to do with those 'narrow minded enclave right wingers' keeping taxes down and common sense in.

You are always welcome to be my neighbor in the Upstate, but assimilate and realize what culture you're moving into. I imagine your upstate NY lifestyle may be similar to what I experience, so it's not like you're moving from NYC to Mayberry:laughing:. Yankees are just the visitors, but the '**** yankees' are the ones that stayed!

My aunt moved moved to Aiken SC back in 1980 and she lived there until 1997. I remember going there to visit her and it seemed like an ok place to live. There was a lot of West Virginia folks living there during that time. Many people that lived there moved thier to work at the savanna river plant if i recall right. Aiken had to first Walmart I ever remember going into.

The medical facilities in the Columbia area really are good. My wife is a ten year breast cancer survivor and she had excellent care at SC Oncology in Columbia. They are in the top 10 nationally for breast cancer treatment...not that either of you are having that issue. There is a heart hospital and an orthopedic specialty hospital there as well. I had to go to the ortho hospital a few years ago when I vaulted myself over my horse...slippery new saddle...don't ask. Anyway, I think the healthcare is pretty good and the attitude if the caregivers has been good.

Another town about 35 minutes from Columbia is Camden. It has a decent sized horse community like Aiken, just not nearly as big. (Aiken has something like 4 or 5 polo fields, I think.) Lots of money in the Aiken horse community. Decent medical facilities there as well. I've spent a good bit of time in the hospitals in the Aiken-Augusta area because I grew up with my father having a serious heart condition. My wife actually had her back surgery in Aiken 20 years ago. She had good results from her discectomy performed by a neurosurgeon there.

Good luck with the decision making. I understand the difficulty you're facing. It's really hard to give up the animals you love. I wish you luck and peace with the difficulties you're facing.

My brother moved to Honea Path SC and worked at the Tire Factory. He said the people do not like Northerners coming down to take those jobs.

Well in Fairfield County where I live, we're just thankful to have any decent folks move in that want to participate in the community. We are a rural county with only around 54,000 people. As a matter of fact, an Ohio guy moved here and was put in charge of the Chamber of Commerce before he could turn around good. Heck I was elected to the historical society board in the first year we were here and my wife wound up chairing the board of zoning appeals. This county is starving for civic minded folks, even if some of the old holdouts are a bit resentful. There's always a few rotten apples in the barrel.

Thanks guys!!!

We're very interested in both Aiken and Greenville. Can you tell us neighborhoods to look at and neighborhoods to avoid. And does anyone know anything about radioactive ground water from SRS. Is that something to be concerned about?

Yes, Greenville, SC is a very nice place to live, ( our youngest son lives there ). He loves the place. Great downtown, friendly, and nice countryside. And, yes, traffic can be a nightmare, but where isn't it? As far as Columbia, SC it is also a great place, but hotter than the hinges on the gates of he!! in the summer. Any place in upstate SC is nice, good luck

So you want a few acres? Do you want to keep any animals? Want rural, secluded, or a neighborhood? how far from downtown? Realize downtown Greenville is mostly entertainment not extensive retail. The big retail centers are east along the Woodruff road corridor. Traffic there is bad. You couldn't pay me to live near there. And traffic on I 85 leading in and out of town is also heavy at rush hours, especially on the north side. So that leaves the northern part of the county towards Tigerville or Travelers Rest. It's somewhat conservative and religious, but good people. That's more scenic, closer to the mountains, hiking trails and rivers. Or west towards Pickens county, near Easley or Dacusville. Also scenic and rural, and close to the big lakes of Hartwell, Keowee, and a Jocasse. Or south towards Lauren's county. Not as mountainous, more pastures and cattle, but still an easy drive to Greenville. But not much that direction as far as hiking trails. I would avoid Simpsonville or Greer, not because they are not nice, but those are the areas of uncontrolled growth and subdivision booms, so traffic is much worse. But that's where most newcomers settle, I guess because there are many homes to choose from and they don't know any better. I'll go there to shop the big retail chains but only if I have to.

These rural areas are all within 15 or 20 miles from the city center. That far out will offer much cheaper land and home prices. But if you want closer with a house and lot rather than acreage, that's possible too. Just depends on what you want.

Greenville is the medical center of the upstate. There is a medical school here. So healthcare is good. The closest other big city medical center is Columbia, our state capital. Columbia is nice, but a good bit hotter in summer. Northern Greenville county is close enough to the mountains to be a little cooler. A little more snow, but very infrequent. And it's gone in a few days.

Hope this helps.

As far as Aiken, my understanding is that the horse community is small, mainly race horses and polo. So it's a high society monied crowd. But I may be wrong. Aiken is a nice town from what I hear but Greenville has more to offer in my opinion. Consider BMW decided to locate their US headquarters nearby. And Michelin USA. And Cabelas just built a huge retail store here. Bass Pro is coming nearby. Clemson university is building an automotive research center here. I think these corporations are high on this area too. Aiken is not near anywhere ( well maybe Augusta Georgia). You rarely go thru Aiken to get anywhere. Whereas Greenville is on I-85 and I-26 which are main pathways to Atlanta, Charlotte, Columbia, Asheville, etc. and we have a larger airport if that matters. Not dissing Aiken, as I have friends there. but I love Greenville's proximity to the mountains. The climate of Aiken is more like Columbia's. I doubt there are many hiking trails near there, certainly none at higher elevations.

Don't know anything about the SRP other than it has a reputation of being very secretive. But the downsizing of nuclear weapons programs really hurt the economy of Aiken. I suppose they are recovering.

Thanks HCJ! With a lot of careful consideration, we've decided that we're not looking for acreage but a home on a lot in a nice safe neighborhood. We're giving up our farm because we can't manage it due to our medical issues, so we have to be realistic and realize that we can't maintain land anymore. We'd like a nice, small (no more than 1500 square feet) house. We heard crime can be bad in some areas. Can you suggest some areas that we should look in where we could keep it at a maximum of $150,000? Thanks!!

Crime in Greenville is very minimal. It's really not an issue. My dad was chief of police for years, so I know! I would suggest visiting. Perhaps get a realtor Housing near the city center is more expensive. Look in the Travelers Rest area. Or Powdersville. But there are many areas that would work. I just have a negative bias against anything in the Woodruff Road area due to traffic. There are countless neighborhoods that would work.
