Today, I was using my grader blade on my 1610D to drag some compacted compost forward to loosen it, then I would lift the blade above the pile of compost, drive forward a few feet and lower the blade, drop into reverse, and push the loose compost back towards the compost pile. When I reached a certain point, instead of wheel spin, the rear end seemed to become disengaged. Also, I had the tractor in fwd, and the same happened with the front drive. I could put the tractor in forward and all was well, and reverse worked fine when not maxed per the above discription. Later, a loaded fork lift was stuck in some mud, and I attempted to back up to it to give it a push...same event. It seemed like the rear end disengaged at a certain point. Is this normal, or do I have a problem with something slipping?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Sounds like maybe your gear range selector isn't all the way enguaged in a range? Move the range selector to make sure it is full enguaged and see if the takes care of it.

A 1610d.. is that powershift?

Also, does it 'kick out of gear' in forward under load?

Chris?

Thanks for the input...now to answer your question. Yes, the 1610D is powershift, and no, it does not kick out of gear in forward ranges under load, only when maxed in reverse. My initial guess was some kind of fault or overload protection synch....but I am going to insure that the range selection is firmly in place and try to replicate the incident. Also, under normal operation...say second, high range, 2000 rpm...I have a whine from the drivetrain...is this normal?

Len or roger will be better able to answer this.. I've never used the powershift models myself.. but from what i understand.. it is still a gear driven drivtrain, just with auto-clutch packs or something.
On my ym1700... I don't hear any drivetrain whine.. even in high range, low gear, or high range high gear...
Could this be some sort of pilot bearing problem?.. again.. not familiar enough with the powershift.
Tell us what you find out about the range selector.

Hillbilly, are you sure that the problem is not simply that the scraper is being lifted by the load and that the 3pt arms are then lifting the tractor as you back up? I used to have this problem doing the same thing you are describing, and particularly when I tried to use the scraper in reverse without letting it all the way down. In fact, that is what usually causes me to pull forward, relower the scraper, and take another push.
If it isn't that, then we will have to think much harder, and probably more expensively..... :-(.

As for the whine, my powershift does it too in both 2wd and 4wd when in either of the higher ranges. Frankly I am a little concerned.... but so far not enough to have an oil analysis done. It has made the whine for the past 4 or 5 years now without a change. With or without a load in the loader.

My gear drive Yanmar doesn't make that whine at all, but since I have owned it since near new I know what kind of workit has done. It has had the hell worked out of it but never had any sudden shock loads. The only way I can get a get a whine out of that gear drive tractor if I try to drive it in 4wd in the higher ranges, but doing that is knowingly abusing the tractor so to be expected.

On our big heavy equipment where I work, we do 6mo. oil analysis on most of the final drives of our machines, etc.
I know you are probably aware of this, but the tech that does our oil samples left me some collection bottles and supplies, and told me what to look for, concerning bearings... Even under a kids microscope, you can tell the difference between chrome flames, copper flakes, and brass flakes.
If you have a kids microscope, and a few slides.. might be worth doing a home check on the oil.

Hillbillyman, if you're sure there is no wheel spin, is it literally jumping out of gear, or is it possible you are getting clutch slippage in low gear under heavy load? If not jumping out of gear, put it up against a tree in low, first gear and see if it kills the engine or slips.

I had a 1510D that jumped out of reverse. It ended up being the pin that holds the shift lever on had worn an oblong hole not letting the tractor go completely in gear. I drilled the hole a little larger and replaced the pin with a machine screw and nut and that stopped it.

A brief note...I wanted to let you all know that I'm up to my eyeballs in rebuilding a bathroom, and will try the suggestions posted so far as soon as possible...just did not want to leave you hanging.
