RF signal damage?

I've had so many remotes die, I don't think about it much any more.

As for RF, the signal strength your wireless card is putting out is very low. To "induce" enough voltage in a device like a remote to kill it is not likely. These wireless transmitters are everywhere. If they put out that kind of power, all kinds of computer components and accessories would be failing.

Since this was a factory device, one would think it would last a while. But I have gone through at least 6 of the "replacement remotes" around here over the last 3-4 years. They are mass produced crap. They die with the slightest provocation /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

An IR remote (line of sight) has to be pointed directly at the unit in order for it to function where as a RF remote only needs to be pointed in the direction of the unit. A majority of IR remotes operate in the 30-40 KHz range and RF remotes operate in the 400 MHz range. So either your remote is losing its codes or something is over riding the frequency.

BTW- I'm sure you've tried this - but since remotes are mostly microprocessor-controlled devices, occasionally I've had one go "off in the weeds".

Take the batteries out for a few seconds to reset it and try it again before you toss it into the circular file /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I would try Sendero's suggestion to take out the batteries.

Everyonce in awhile I or the kids will manage some key press combination that messes up the remote. Taking out the batteries fixes the problem.

I can't think of a remote that has gone bad in 20 years. Maybe the one that went to the $500 VCR I bought back in the 80s. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Our remotes get dropped on the concrete floor very frequently. Some of them rattle when you shake them. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif But they still work. Somehow. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

When you say, "air card", are you talking about a wireless LAN card like an 802.x, or are you talking about an EvDO data card? (there is a brand called AirCard)

An EvDO card will put out far more power than an 802.x device, but still not nearly enough to fry your remote. Soundguy's ham rig would put both to shame by a huge margin, and he says he's not having a problem. Nope, don't think the air card is your culprit.

OTOH, when it comes to inducing voltages, proximity is king. I would keep your remote away from your aircard just as a precaution.
