RFM on 2 foot grass

i agree with steve , set the mower as high as it will allow, and go very slow, will probably have to make a few passes and it is not going to look to well, once you get it cut, give it a day or too to dry out then lower the mower settting and cut it again.

It is mostly hp, but getting rid of cut grass is also involved.

When I hear the grass is plugging up (my X485 with 54" deck) I stop, shut off the PTO and then start it up again. The heavy charge of grass settles onto the blades, and it up-chucks the clog right out the chute. That was done a lot last year when we had a lot of rain and heavy grass that wold get a foot tall. This year, 18" grass mows easy.

Just take what it can handle, and re-mow if needed to get it all the same height.

Horsepower is good but too much can get you into trouble. Just make sure to take your time. I was making some new trails in the back of my lot and ran threw it first with my landscape rake to grab the large rocks, logs, etc. Then I used the MMM to go down lower and lower. It cut threw it like a champ but on my first past I wasn't going slow enough and spun the belt. You may have to end up getting a new belt on your RFM if you have a lot to mow.

If your RFM is a side discharge then you will have some serious windrows of cut grass, so like someone previously said let it dry out for a couple of days then do it again.

Keep your pto speed up and your ground speed slow.

I would like to add one thing as to why I wouldn't do it. It is not whether the mower can cut it or a HP issue. I would be worried about hitting something that could wreck your mower. Brush hogs are designed for hitting stuff and I have seen many a brush hog with the sides dented out from hitting things. This is my worry along with the drive of the mower.

....in my case my field is pretty mature and has been mowed for over 4 years, so I am not concerned with cleaving rocks /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I am more curious about the HP question and if it matters or not

I mowed my "nature" area a month ago. Here is the height of the weeds. I have a 84" finnish mower with 32 PTO HP. It has been mowed before so no surprises.

Barring unforeseen objects, your mower belt will tell the tale.

Interesting you should mention it. I have heard from several sources now that my belt would be toast. My International 454D ran this Landpride RFM before my Kubota L3830. Suffice it to say, the International had gobs of torque. The belt is now four years old and could easily be mistaken for the extra one that I got free with the mower when it was accidentally shipped with no belt, Carver equipment took care of that plus a set of filters all around for my old L48. No, the belt is fine, contrary to popular belief, I suspect there are many of us here at TBN that have a tractor with enough PTO HP to "smoke it". The mower is tough. Prior to it I had a Woods 80" brush mower. It ran triple parallel belts for the two spindles. It was definitely a beast, but I don't need a beast anymore, my grass may get tall, but whats underneath has been tamed. Rat...
