I have a new 62C mower deck for a John Deere. I was thinking of coating the bottom with Rhino Liner the same way pickup boxs have the sprayed in liner. Has anyone had experience with this.

There has been some talk about doing this. I think most people decided to same there money.
I retired an old JD240 last year, it was a 1988 model. The deck was in good shape, had some minor surface rust on the top, but the underside looked good.

I know Rhino is a very durable product, but I also know a lot of high impact collisions occur underneath the mowing deck. The Rhino lining would probably hold up for a while if your cutting area is clean (no sticks, rocks, etc), but I doubt it would hold up for the long haul.

I don't believe I'd spend the money for it.

Grass clippings would cling to the inside of the mower deck quicker. You would have to spray it out after each cutting. You need to clean one out occasionally anyway. Most of the time the rust develops in a corner of the deck where grass clippings have clump and held moisture.

Back in 1993 I tried using two different products on the underside of brand new push mowers, one was spray on undercoating and the other was brush on undercoating. Neither one stuck for more than a few days of mowing. Certain makes of power washers make an extension wand that fits the spray gun, the end is bent to 90 degrees and sprays a high pressure jet that is like a commercial car wash.

If you have a power washer that kind of attachment does a great job of cleaning MMM deck undersides.

After buying the new tractor, I have looked into this topic quite a bit. I've come to the conclusion that the Rhino coating will only cause more problems, as members responding above have noted. Keeping the underside clean and, when necessary, painted will likely extend the life of the deck to the greatest degree. I am going to try EZ Slide paint when it comes time to paint. This is a paint with graphite and is very slippery once dry. This is exactly what is needed to keep clippings from sticking to the deck and causing rust out. It is available from Tractor Supply (p 217 lower right corner).

I've got one more trick that I got from an old mower I had. It was just a regular 22" type but had an adapter on the right just behind the exit area for the clippings and about 1/2 out the radius of the blade. All you had to do was screw the end of your garden hose to the fitting and turn on the water and the mower. It made a heck of a green spray out the chute but did keep the mower clean if used right after mowing (before everthing dried). I've never done this on a larger deck but the idea should be the same. You could even hook up some piping so that your hose could hook to one fitting but spray water to multiple blades. The downside is that someone needs to drill through their beloved mower deck to try it!!! And I recommend NOT standing "downwind" when the system in in action! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Think it was Toro who used that fitting? Well, no way am I going to drill a big hole in my $2300 7-Iron deck, odds are it will outlast me anyway!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Under the build-it yourself forum, someone mentioned "POR" paint for rust prevention. That might be better to use then the "ez-slide". It might not help with sticking debris, but it sounds like it would solve the real problem your after, "rust prevention".

Has anyone tried the 2 part epoxy paint? We used it on a factory floor and it could take some abuse.
