Ridiculous! Thermostat help?

What I got is 2.5. I think I need 2.75. The 2.5 is the size of the inlet. It barely slips down in the pipe, but it does. It won't sit on the lip for it.

If you can't get the right size you could cheat by cutting two pieces of tin to fit the 2.75 ". If you cut a hole into those two pieces of tin and sandwich the thermostat in there it would get you by.

My first truck was an '85 F250 6.9 diesel. I used to block PART of the radiator with cardboard to help it warm up. But never the whole thing. I added some coolant without bleeding it. But I didn't think I needed to since it was only a gallon low.

On my 90 Cummins I have a winter front on the grill. I open the flaps at around 0 C. On my 98 I have a piece of cardboard covering the whole rad right in front of the intercooler. I pull the cardboard at around 0 C. Otherwise when it gets to -25 or 30 C you just can't get he cab to warm up.

Go to autoparts and buy infrared thermometer pistol. They cost less than $30. Very usefull for many things around the farm. Good for checking fuses, breakers, bearings, bad electrical conection, insulation leaks, heating, radiator temperature and many other things. The cheap one have no emisivity correction so the temperature measured can be little off if the object is not black. When I need more precise measurement I spray a spot of black paint on the object or put on it a patch of black electrical tape.

Yeah I had a 98.5 24 valve and it had a cover that had snaps around the entire grill. That helped some, but even without the cover I never noticed mine running low temp once it got there. Just took longer than normal to get there.

Try a Gates stat for about $40 on eBay etc. the #33049 is 2.875" in diameter and is 190F.
There is a Stant that also fits. A #45479 or #13479 for the cheaper Stant.
If you prefer NAPA then a #357-180 or 33388 .

I'm curious, but for what reason are you trying to get the temperature up in your 730 ? You mention "operating temperature" in the OP, but I don't see any real problem as long as the Deere starts and runs ok.
Or is it what you feel you need to just do it because you are chasing that coolant leak and are "there" ??

No, probably not priced right to sell to the budget minded restorer. But it is a relatively unique thermostat, may not be other options if originality of the tractor is desired. If not there will be alternatives to the industrious.

On older vehicles the reason would be efficiency. The spark plugs and automatic choke are designed for a certain temp range.

Have you tried simply walking into a parts store with what you have in hand? The OD of the thing can't be that odd that they wouldn't have something that would get you in the range. I bet a good auto parts store has 50-100 to choose from.

Don't think it is "bad" nor will it damage anything. Just not as optimum as it could be. But your call and gut feeling.
