I bought a cheap Murray riding lawn mower for less than $1,000 back in October of 2002 or so. It ran pretty well upuntil 2011, but then it started acting up. Honestly, I can't believe I made it through last Summer with it, but somehow I did.

I can't really complain about the Murray, as it's purchase price along with a new starter last year and a couple of inner tubes has cost me less than $100 a year overall, but I do want to step up to something that will not only be a nicer machine, but something that I wouldn't feel bad about putting money into down the road should the engine or transmission need some work.

So, it is time to purchase a new riding lawn mower. My lawn is not too big (maybe 1/3 acre), but it is my elderly neighbor's lawn (probably 1.5 acres) that takes most my time.

I still have my NH TC-33D for real tractor chores, so I just need a riding lawn mower, not a garden tractor. I would however like as robust of a machine that I can get for under $3K (with 6% tax) though.

I've looked at all the big box stores, Tractor Supply Co., and Sears. I've also visited the local Cub Cadet dealer and wanted to visit the John Deere dealer about 30 minutes away yesterday, but the hours on their website were incorrect and they were closed.

The current place that I park my 42" Murray is in my lean-to right next to my NH tractor. If I go with something wider than a 46" deck it would likely not fit next to my tractor, so I'm looking in the 42" - 46" range.

In what little research I've done this weekend the Cub Cadet XT2 LX46" with a fabricated deck seems to be a pretty good bang for the buck. This is available locally from theCub Cadet dealer and they are a good little long established shop that I would feel a lot better about giving my money to than either a big box store or the JD dealership in the next County over.

It looks like the only thing the JD dealership has different than the big box stores for less than $3K out the door is their new S240 Sport. I did a search on here for both these models from CC and JD, but didn't come up with much.

As I know how proud JD owners are I would assume that between the two mentioned above the S240 Sport will receive the most recommendations, but when comparing the specs for the two I think the XT2 LX46" with the fabricated deck comes out ahead.

Having the mowing deck stay on when backing up is definitely a big deal to me and right out of the box the CC seems to have a much better system for doing so. I realize I could tamper with the RIO system on the JD, but I'd rather not have to.

So, please feel free to talk me out of the XT2 LX46", talk me into the S240 Sport, or talk me into something completely different. I'd like to purchase no later than this Friday, April 17th, so please speak up, as I really value the input of the membership here, but I've got to move quickly.

Good luck with any lawn tractor using the Tuff Torq K46 transmission. The 310 Deere is the lowest end lawn tractor with a beefier transmission than the K46.
A ground enagement transmission designed for heavy draft loads uses a 5 bolt hub instead of a keyway axle shaft and a C'Clip. K66 and heavier.

Someone once told me to select a riding mower/lawn tractor by rear axle diameter: "Don't buy anything with a 3/4 rear axle."

I'm sure you will get good advice here, but maybe more here, at the associated lawn forum:

Unless your set on a lawn tractor ,I would look at a low hour true commercial zero turn mower. I purchased a 600 hour exmark two years ago that has been trouble free. They mow faster and easier and are tougher than any big box machine. Around here craigs list is a good source and dealers sometimes have trade ins.

We all have our personal preferences . . . so . . . of the brands you mentioned, I'd go with the Cub Cadet over the John Deere, but would go with Craftsman from Sears over either of them.

And since you said you only need to mow, I'd sure go with a ZTR that will handle the mowing jobs much faster, and you can certainly get a 42" ZTR out the door for under $3,000. You can probably buy cheaper than this, but here's one suggestion:

Since I wanted one that would go through 4' gates, I have the SS3200 and after 4 years only have 115.2 hours on it.

Thanks everyone for your input. I should mention, the reason I have not really considered a zero turn mower is due to using a Cyclone Rake in the Fall. I know some people have pulled Cyclone Rakes or Trac-Vac's behind zero turn units, but I have to believe it is not as ideal as being pulled by a standard riding mower.

Any input on towing with a zero turn?

Towing can be done with a zero turn, but you just have to be very careful not to make too sharp of a turn. Please look at the deck and pump "quality" of a true commercial mower as compared to a residential zero turn. For the price range you are looking at you will have to go with a used commercial mower ,but they are built to last, being used all day every day. I have two properties I maintain and have a commercial mower at each. One I bought new in 1999 and it has been almost trouble free the whole time (replaced belts and two of the 3 spindles last year) . The other I bought used with about 550 hours two years ago and have done only routine oil changes on it. Even a residential zero turn will be the quality of the Cadet or Deere.

No direct experience, but the cyclone rake should work fine with a zero turn since it has a two point (rigid) hitch. It will pivot around like when it's hooked to any type of mower, but you won't get into the jack knife situation like you can easily do with a Trac-Vac.

No experience with the Cyclone Rakes, but I used to pull a lawn sweep with a Toro ZTR:
Yard Tuff Lawn Sweeper — 48in.W, 14 1/2 Cu. Ft., Model# SP-48T | Lawn Sweepers Vacuums| Northern Tool + Equipment

Now that I have the bagger kit for my Toro SS3200, it included the hitch for a pin hitch such as the lawn sweep. However, I drilled it out a bit to put a hitch ball on it and used it to tow my 5 x 8 trailer:
Carry-On Trailer® Mesh Floor Utility Trailer, 5 ft. x 8 ft., 2,000 GVWR - Tractor Supply Co.
