NC has a four year sliding age starting at 16. If the child is under 16 its off to prison you go.

Sounds like TX has a three year sliding age.

But that this has moved the topic off of the origional thread.

I would aggree that the Registration is a half measure.
Convicted Pedophiles should be in prison. What many people
don't understand about these people is that they are sexually
attracted to children. They are often very specific in the child's
age, "look" and gender. I dont believe they can change their
desires. I don't think anyone can. They might be controllable
but I think that is limited as well. And once they have stepped
across the line they should be put in prison so that they are
no longer a threat.

Now some rapists just don't care about the age, race, or gender
of their victim. If a target of oppottunity appears they will take
advantage of the situation.

But rapists are generally treated lightly in my view and
Registration at least lets you know they are located near your
family.

Hmm...well before the "internet", there was this funny book with yellow pages and/or white pages, with names, phone numbers and, more often than not, addresses. Plus, one's been able to buy maps for...how long? And, although more inconvenient, more than a few libraries have had reverse directories, as well as property tract map libraries.

The information has been there far longer than 5 years. All that has changed is that it is slightly easier for far more people to get at leisurly, rather than someone utilizing a little gumshoe work.

Even if no one knows where you live, by slight deduction over time, everyone will still eventually learn where you live. "Yeah, I think that's the paranoid guy who wears tinfoil caps who lives down at the end of the culdesac and drives a '72 Cadillac de Ville with black-out windows. He doesn't get any mail, etc. We just don't let our kids trick-or-treat there."

Not much new risk here.

the real problems will be as more and more databases start cooperating with each other, either above-the-board or yet other databases that keep track of the data that one may sell or "provide" to others.
