? rmove clutch to replace sprocket on chainsaw

I saw a video on youtube about removing the clutch to replace an oiler, just last night. The guy used the rope trick and a special tool to fit in the half round holes and turn the nut. I saw the special tool available on the internet, probably Amazon or Ebay.

Next time try pulling the plug and feeding nylon rope into cylinder = no mess from at fluid, works for me .

didn't have any rope at work on me ( thoigh agree it would have worked ).. however oil was plentiful.

besides. I bet the rings love that cleaning and upper cyl lube

Not a good idea to use air impact wrench. The vibrations have been known to knock the needle bearings loose on the rod. Rope in the cylinder to lock up the piston and then either a wrench on the clutch or I have used a brass drift and a small hammer to knock it loose.

I have used rope in the cylinder also. Worked great!

+1 For the rope. It stops the piston nicely(and you carry 2 of them on your feet all day...lol) A spanner works best in the clutch, but a big crescent opened up to fit in there, and another one placed 90 degrees to that over the handle will work in a pinch. I made a spanner for my Husky out of 1/2" square stock, and just welded 2 pieces of it 1" long onto a 1' piece for a handle. Worked like a charm, until I bought a Stihl...Much easier to unclip the clutch drum amd get it over with IMHO. Good luck!
