About15 years ago my neighbor bout a used Yanmar 2000 to tend to his 15 acre parcel. He started off with a 6ft. bush hog. I tried to tell him it was way too much mower for this little machine. He graduated to a 6ft finish mower which the tractor pretty much handled. The machine received little maintenance like 2 year oil changes and an occassional greasing. It lived outdoors uncovered.
A month ago he started conplaining about a loss of power, gee I wonder.
I told him to try a health dose of injector cleaner thinking the injectors might be filthy. Haven't heard back on that yet.
Thinking about his problem a number of things came to mind. Valves, piston rings, head gasket, things that on a gas engine could be weeded out with a compression check. But can you do a compression check on a diesel engine? Through the injectors maybe?
It does not smoke and starts right up.
Any thoughts short of an angine rebuild.

Since it does not smoke and starts right up, I'm not too concerned about a rebuild yet.

The best gauge of engine health is a leak down test. As with a compression test, you will need a tool matched to the injector fitting in the head (injector must be removed) plus the leak down tester.

Before I'd do all that, I'd go with the basics; air filter clean, as well as fuel filters/water separators. Plus, if the fuel is old, I'd be tempted to drain the fuel tank and put in fresh fuel.

An engine only needs three things, air, fuel, and ignition at the right time.

First thing I'd do for a piece of equipment that old is to drop and clean out the fuel tank. There could be water allowing algae to grow in the tank. Forget fuel additives, visually inspect the inside of the tank the best you can and clean it with solvents or have the gunk boiled out. Then change the filters and pour in fresh fuel and see how she runs from there.
