generally if the item will fit between the points (or quills) then the bar will cut it.

This looks very handy.

County road dept. uses boom mowers to keep the roads clear. With miles to clear I think that would be the perfect tool for you. I don't know how expensive they are but would suspect very. You would also need a large tractor and enough counter weight to prevent overturning.

What does a ditch mowing...sickle 3 pt attachment cost? Seems like all the farmers had one...I assume they are 3 pt driven?

In my part time job I drive a boom mower with a flail ax head to do exactly what you want to do. The park has a trail along the old W&OD railroad bed and the brush likes to grow out toward the trail to grab trail users. My job is to use the boom mower and cut the vegetation back several feet from the trail The blades on this machine are 15 two pound ax heads and they will cut up and mulch just about anything I come across. I have lifted the head up high and cut down small trees starting at the top and going completely to the ground. all that is left is wood chips. It is not a fast process but I cut about a mile on a good day if it has been cut in the last couple of years. One area I cut the other day had not and it took me 4 hours to cut back 150 yards of trail. It is an awesome machine. The park has 42 miles of trail so they were able to justify buying the big tractor and boom mower. I would love to have one to maintain my trail on our property but will just have to make do with the pole chain saw and then bush hog the branches on the trail. Rick

I've got one of these for my mini excavator. Works great and has excellent reach with the excavator boom.

Some of these were pully driven and some were driven by the PTO. Pretty much replaced by disc mowers and others. High maintenance machine. Lotas configurations......some are three point mounted, some semi-mounted, pull types, and some are side-mounted to the frame. However, a sickle bar mower like this is for cutting alfalfa, hay and grasses. If you used it on brush it would not last but a few feet. Wrong tool for your needs IMO.

obviously you have never run a sicklebar in brush before. I have and can tell you as long as you dont hit rocks/barbwire with one, its great in brush.

you must keep them extreamly sharp to cleanly shear grass. not the case to cut brush.
