Do any of you have experience with road maintainance, specifically dirt roads? I am wondering if a practice used by my township is common. I have a hard time seeing the rational behind this, thought maybe some of you with some experience might be able to shed some light.

Anyway, you can bet the house that it will rain 24 hours after the road is graded...I can't blame the township for that. What I can't understand is why, after running the grader, they come through with a York rake. All the rake seems to do is fluff up the material on the top. Of course when the rains come, this fluff turns into 3" of slop. Was wondering if nay of you spent any time on a road crew and whether this is a common practice.

It sounds like they have let too much dirt get into their gravel and its not compacted enough. THe landfill we run has been vacant over a year now and we are parking the truck there till we get the permitt I have to park theMack there. Its washboarded the roads from crow hopping now. Dad mde me wait till a good rain to blade the roads. With that it mixes the clay the aggregates and the Fines all together. then we take the truck and load it with a 20 yard dumpster 1/4 full of dirt or the scraper with a load of dirt and compact the compound heck out of it.
