Road kill

Maybe Pete just left off the part where he laughed and told them he was not injured and appreciated their offer of help to another human being. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Geez, I routinely pull over and ask if folks need help.. when I see them stopped beside the road on a cold winter day. Guess I'm a tourist. /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

BTW, what does the law say about taking a deer you've accidentally killed with a vehicle?

New Hampshire at one time had a bumper sticker in poor taste..<font color=blue> Welcome to New Hampshire now go HOME! <font color=blue><font color=black>..like I said in poor taste. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif

Here, in our county at least, if you call the County Police to the scene of the accident they'll give you a deer tag, then its yours. Tastey!

In Canada The carcass is claimed by the Department of Fish and Wildlife or whichever name they go by.

Thou shalt not take home road kill such as deer.

We pick up road kill regularly. A quick check of the body temp tells "yay" or "nay." I've been trying to find a dark grey table cloth with a yellow line down the middle - just to freak out the inlaws.

In Texas, "It is against the law to possess a deer or any part of a deer that has been hit by a motor vehicle."

(2002-2003 TPWD Outdoor Annual Hunting and Fishing Regulations)

Yeah, Thomas, I figure Pete was at least half joking, and I was, too./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif Sometimes humor rubs some people the wrong way. I'd heard about your bumper sticker, and I also remember one that was popular in Texas back when they first lowered the speed limit to 55 mph to conserve fuel. It said "Drive 70 and Freeze a Yankee". I'm sure a lot of folks thought that was very funny and some didn't see the humor in it at all./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Ron -- Please don't! Of all the things a local would be given grief over, accepting help from someone with Mass plates on their car ranks right up there! /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Lighten up a bit. We meet some wonderful people from all over the world who come to our little part of Paradise and brighten our lives as we brighten theirs. If you can't have fun now and then what's the use of going on? After a moment of shocked silence this particular family burst out laughing and shared the magic of the moment with us. It's a tale they'll take back home and probably embellish over the years. It's all part of the Vermont experience. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

I live in an "economically depressed" area in Northern Lower Michigan where the local and county police departments have a list of folks willing to pickup deer that have been killed by a car or a poacher. If a flatlander or other southerner hits a deer and doesn't want it the officer will contact one of the folks on the list to pick it up after they are issued a permit.
