Roadside mowing danger

It is not a pet peeve for me, it is a full blown ready to explode moment for me. Especially those that have the deflector removed or tied up with a bungee strap. There should be a law against blowing the discharge toward the road and commercial cutters removing the deflectors. I heard the other day on the local news that Illinois does have a law against discharging grass onto the roadway because of the danger it creates for motorcycle riders.

But who is going to enforce it against the state, county, and township officials roadside mowing that when they get done you can't see the road surface for the grass clippings.

It wasn't grass clippings but instead limbs and debris from the county using their rotary cut machine on a boom to trim back tree limbs. I made the county judge drive his fancy new vehicle out here to see how he liked having to drive over the stuff. They now use a truck mounted broom when they decide to trim. So changes can be made if you jack up the right person.

A couple of years ago, a couple camping on the beach on North Padre Island, TX were killed when a drunk ran them over with his 4x4 in the middle of the night.


When I was in South Africa, the professional hunters told me you had to be careful driving in the early morning and watch for people passed out in the middle of the road. It seems the locals will hitch up their donkey cart and head over to a family members place for drinks and cheer. At the end of the night, when they get too drunk, they'll get the donkeys heading home while they pass out in the cart. Sometimes they fall out of the cart and the donkeys continue home without them :laughing:.

Actually I believe it.
"Pedestrians" are regularly hit by cars/trucks on Oregon highways; I'm always surprised when I'm driving on I-5 and see someone waltzing down the breakdown lane.

I doubt that any grass discharged onto the roadway stays on the road past the first couple of cars blowing it off.

This may be another example of looking for a problem that is really not a problem!

EXACTLY! There痴 always more to these tales of trajedy than folks are saying . I rode bike for years myself. It痴 more like keepin to the speed limit, no afterburners on those curves and watching the road. This stuff is trivial to the sand that blows or gets washed into the road.

I ditch mow for municipalities as a mowing contractor, but that is one reason why I really like the flail mower. Sure it cannot pancake an alderbush into oblivion, but it mulches everything up without flinging it like a bushog, or leave nasty looking leavings like a sicklebar.

My bushog just gave up the ghost after 60 years of faithful service, but I think I am going to replace it with a flail mower.
