Pardon my ignorance, but what is the problem with no fenders?

Roots and branches have been caught by my Bobcat tires and slammed against the ROPS - I am certain that I would not want to run my machine without something between me and the tires. Not hard to imagine a way for those to knock me out of my seat if I didn't have the cage between me and the wheels.
