Has anyone ever built a rock screener that you can use to screen large to small rocks from soil. What I want to do is build something that has some steel mesh on it that can have an adjustable angle that I can set up and put a dump trailer under it and then bring a load of rocky soil to it with my FEL and dump on it and let the soil fall thru to the dump trailer and have the rocks roll off. I've got lots of rocky soil with rocks primarily from 2" to 12" in diameter and I would like to be able to produce a lot of rock-free soil for landscaping. Does anyone have any experience with something like this? I'm thinking of using an old pickup axel and some angle iron to frame up something that I could put the steel mesh on and be able to drag it around to different places and then put a dump trailer (which I'll also need to build) under it to receive the good soil.

I just looked at an item on eBay called a "rock fork". This may not be the kind of item you're looking for, though.

For something like you are talking aobut I would suggest a old used conveyor which has Herring Bone deck with Flat Wire Belting. soil and sand/ small rocks less than .75" will fall through, the under side needs to be set up so rocks fall off to the side not onto the bottom conveyor webbing. large rocks are conveyed up and off the top edge and into a pile.

there is also the simple rout of the rock screener posted elsewhere here. not sure how wel that would work but probably pretty well, made by an angled expanted sheet metal and or screen. that gets the rocks out but if you have 12" rocks those are going to damage it some., unless you make some large bars that project them off to the outlet side prior to them hitting the screening material.

Check with local machenery recycle places used auction houses too, like McKeens in Cleveland, not sure of the spelling but they do have a web site, but I don't have that handy either... most large metro areas will ahve used equipment places that you can buy stuff pennys on the $
