I actually bought an Allis Chalmers because of his books a few years ago (and the price was right). It is a model C and I know he has at least one of them but the WC is certainly his favorite. I like that old C a lot more since getting a good tool to use it on this spring (JD 7.5 ft pull-type disc). I put a good many hours on that combo this season and that old C never missed a beat. Sure is one gutsy little tractor and I can see why he is so fond of the old "orange". I dont even have a battery in my C, but it starts every time with half a turn of the crank handle (as long as it is not too cold out). I am planning on using it to drag out a bunch of logs monday as that trike front is really nice for getting thru the woods.

I'm looking for a "C" to go with my 1951 Minneapolis Moline BF and the 1951 Farmall Super A. Hope one shows up for sale soon.

The C really is a strong little tractor. I actually used mine on a 2x14" plow one time and it didnt do too bad. If it had loaded tires it would be fine on that plow. I like the unloaded tires for dragging logs as it minimizes ruts in the woods when it is soft (the trike front helps with that also). The brakes work great and you can spin the tractor completely around in place. The thing I like the least about it is getting on and off. I added a step that helps a bit but it still aint too easy. My Ford 8n is a lot friendlier in that respect. If and when I get too crippled up with age, I will probably sell it for that reason. Mine is a pre-war model with spoked front rims that I understand are quite rare. The serial number indicates that it is one of the first thousand or so produced.

I've not had the honor to meet him.. just some email and traded some pics. Yep.. I know he's done book opening and tv spots.. knew he was a prof.. just didn't know what subject. I like his easy going yet machine-sarcastic level of writing.. I remember one story he was talking about taking an engine or other assembly apart.. by the time it was apart.. he had broken about half the bolts off.. whoops.. there went another.. etc..

hope he puts another one out soon.. I've still got space in the bookcase :)

say.. any ford 7XX on your rader anywhere south of ya? I'm looking for another project and a 7xx would fill the gap in my lineup of 5xx-9xx.

you guys getting the rain that we are ( daily and heavy.. 4 " this week )

I'll keep my eyes and ears open regarding the Ford 700nf's. Not many around here, even "back in the day" 99% of the nf tractors sold around here that size were (are?) IH. Seen a couple over the ages, but not many. The bulk of the non-NF tractors sold here were MF's and Fords, but they tended to be "low profile" models. (ie, 28" or 30" rears, wf)

We've FINALLY had some dry weather the past 2 weeks. This ended up as the 3rd wettest summer on record here, and the coolest summer on record.

thankya.

around here you can find 6xx series like flies on a carcass.. and 8xx nearly thre same.. a few 2000/3000 used by small contractors.. and very few NF machines of any type.
