Best choice is a tall enough opening - but sounds like you guys need a "tell-tale". Railroads used to use these outside of tunnel portals - I assume to alert a brakeman to get off the roof in time - or warn someone of an overheight load. Not sure how they'd get stopped in time though.
How about a chime/bell/noisemaker (cow bell?) or the like hung and positioned so you'd hit it with the rops a few feet from the door - time enough to hit the brakes. Or someone a little more high tech oriented might be able to adapt a garage door safety sensor beam.
