I saw a slick little roller attachment yesterday. Some of you may have seen one before but it was the first time I have seen it. Sorry I didn't get any pictures but I didn't have my camera with me.

Anyway, it was a roller attached to the front of a skid loader. It was probably about 6' wide with about a 2' diameter drum and there was a hydraulic line attached to what I assume was a vibrating mechanism.

I was in rush hour traffic and it was being operated on a new access road that was being constructed next to the road I was on.

Got me to thinking that it wouldn't be too tough to build a similar attachment for the FEL on a tractor.

Great for compacting fill over utility instalations.

Do you think somethng like that would be too heavy for a FEL?

Let's take a stab at calculating the weight. We need to know the volume first. We'll use the 2' diameter and 6' height (length) guess as true measurements.

The volume equals the (area of it's circular base) x (height)

Volume = PI x r^2 x h

((3.14)(12"^2)x(72")) = 32,555.52 cubic inches

There are 231 cubic inches in a gallon

32555.52 / 231 = 140.93 gallons

140.93 gallons x 8 pounds (assuming filling with water) = 1127.44 pounds

This doesn't really take into consideration the thickness of the drum, etc and even though I believe my formulas and calculations to be correct I have to say the volume/weight seems a little excessive.

Comments? (Other than why did you waste your time /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)
