Hello Guys, This is my first time posting so please excuse my verbage of tractors. I just bought this tractor for about 800.00 with serveral attachments or implements. First problem I notice was that the glow plug heater was not getting voltage when I tried the preheat. I am getting both kinds of smoke out of the exhuast , greyish and black. I was told by the previous owner to change the oil and dump out the diesel from the tank and then bleed the lines. Which I did and still no go. I have replaced the original filter with a see through filter. I have checked the fuel pump by opening removing the line at the injector tip and they do squirt out. So my question is if it has low compression and I add a sae 30 oil will this help get better compression or will it just not help at all? Thanks IMG_20161220_151947.jpgIMG_20161220_152016.jpgIMG_20161220_154216.jpg

Thanks, I will post any finding and I think I am going to clean the injectors. Do you know what color the smoke should be if it is getting fuel?

Thanks

Move the fuel lever forward more. Smoke can be white, blue, black or combinations of those. No or little smoke = no or little fuel. If you're getting fairly thick black smoke then there is enough fuel to start and heat for combustion (compression ok) and you should be fine unless there is an air restriction. Check the air filter. $800 for a TX2160F w/ implements is a steal. Nice find.

I do find on my G174 that it is hard to start without the glow plugs. Usually with about 20 seconds of glow plugs it fires right up. So I would try to them working.
Agree with Ilileurtractor that the fuel lever may need to advanced more. The manual states to move the lever to half way, and full in cold weather.

Will do.. Thanks for the reply I will try as soon as it stops raining. I also think they might be bad.. The glow button on top of the dashboard does not light up or glow... I have tested that when I crank it does send 12v to the glow plugs but when I go left on the ignition to glow them then I get no voltage. I have fixed that already and I will test again with a new battery.

Thanks

It will start and run without the air filter but there is no reason to leave it out. It just needs to be checked for cleanliness and replaced or reinstalled. It should be obvious if it needs to be replaced. Yes, glow plugs are a necessity although I would still argue if you're getting black smoke you have enough heat to support combustion whether or not your glow plugs are working. I would invest in a DC clamp style meter (< $40 off Amazon) and check amps to the glow plugs. They should draw around 10 amps each if working correctly.

Here is a link to a DC clamp meter. Most amp clamps have traditionally been AC only but because of lower cost Hall Effect devices DC clamp meters are now affordable.

Disconnect the glow plugs from power. Like as in take off the wires. Using a test light hooked up to the positive post on the battery touch each terminal on the glow plugs one by one. If the glow plug is good the test light will come on. If the light doesn't come on then that glow plug needs to be replaced.

Be careful when turning out glow plugs in a head. You don't want to break the tip off in the head. It's a lot of work to remove a broken off tip. They don't just blow out by turning the engine over either
