Last weekend I decided to attend to the 50hr service on my TC-30, 7308, and rotory mower. I think I found all the zerks and checked the oil levels for the gear boxes, but I ran out of time and didn't change the oil/filter or the gas filter. My question is this: I don't have a tool for removing the oil filter, do I need one or can I remove the filter by hand or with a general purpose tool.

Thanks, Paul

Strap wrench at sears

As the above said the strap wrench.I try to use the regular filter wrench, or some large pliers. It all depends on how much room there is and how tight the filter is.
And remember to coat the new seal with oil or grease. it will seal it better, and make future removal easier.

regular filter wrench of any configuration works jus' fine. I used to write the hours and date on my filter whenever I changed it so it was close at hand and whenever I checked the oil - there was the date I changed it last looking at me. THEN they changed the color of the filter! used to be white - now is black ......the last time - when I opened the box to take the filter out - I actually laughed out loud at the joke on me.:D

Could you use a fine tip white or silver marker for writing on the black filter?

Guy.

Hopefully the same gorilla that put my filter on at the factory did not do yours. Mine was REALLY on tight and due to the FEL frame was also difficult to get leverage on. I was not able to use a strap wrench, so I picked up the plier type filter wrench from Napa and it worked great. The filter bracket on my TN also wanted to turn so I had additional opportunities there :)

General purpose tool = screwdriver thru the filter and turn by hand, but this gets a little messy

You probably already know this but when changing the fuel filter you will probably need to prime the fuel pump afterwards

I second the oil filter pliers. I tried everything else with no luck. Greg

Thanks for all the help and advice.

I'm a part time lurker on this bulletin board. I don't know enough, or have enough experience, to offer any advice. So I just read through the threads and learn from all the experienced participants. Thanks for help with this question, and all the other advice you've unknowingly provided me.
