The new trees that I planted were "standard" (full) size so if I can get them tall enough the elk can do whatever they want. The trouble is getting them to that point. I am now pruning lower branches starting at around 10 feet. The other apple and pear trees have always been picked from an orchard ladder anyway.

iPhone pictures of my small herd. They are here pretty much every day now. By spring I don't expect to have any young fruit trees that remain. These guys are tall, yet they are skittish, other than the largest one. He stands his ground. My dogs chase deer, but they seem to think these are cows which they have been trained not to chase.
