Root cellar

Instead of a root cellar, could I achieve the same result by using a couple of old refrigerators in the garage? They are cold and dark. It might cost $100 per year for power, but at my age, over the next 15 years it will less expensive than constructing a root cellar, and I will not have to walk through two ft of snow in the winter.
