Here is a sad story of a home made rops that was bad design. sad story No not rocket science. Its your life!

I have designed and built ROPS for track machines that have withstood roll overs with minimal damage to the machine and none to the operator. We are talking massive weight and momentum with a Cat. The problem with these stories is not the lack of ROPS, but what they are trying to do with a tractor. I would seriously question if the commercial ROPS I have seen on domestic imports would withstand a rear flip while chaining out a fence post. This isn't a flop or a roll, this is a full out, power on driven rotation. In the article, it suggests the problem was the inadequate attachment of the base and explains the factory ROPS attachment. While definitely better, I doubt it would have withstood that flip without forward struts. These are tragic examples for sure and I would caution anyone out there with commercial ROPS that if you feel you are protected while attempting something like this, you may be in for a rude surprise. Tractors are not a solution to every farm problem. I guess I need to apologize and withdraw my earlier statements, but I remain the odd one out here. If I was concerned about a rear powered rotation, especially with an older unit like that International, I would build my own roll cage, not rely on a commercial ROPS.

HERE is an ariticle where factory rops are tested in a rear flip. As you can see , this test is set up as if you were pulling a post out of the ground. Just like the article where the teen was killed . In this test, the certified tested rops held, where the home made rops failed.

These are great examples and show some very nice ROPS. I have no doubt that if the homemade ROPS had adequate attachment around the axle flanges as per article, and the added rear strut as pictured (or better yet, front struts) it would have held up also. The most valuable clip is probably the one showing the no seat belt test, which most people tend to ignore. I think your contribution on the ROPS question has been really worth while and you should be commended for taking the time to provide these excellent articles.

Thanks to all of you folks for the perspectives and info you've provided. Much appreciated!

I am still moving forward with trying to source an OEM White Farm Equipment ROPS through AGCO. It doesn't look as though the 2-32 ROPS is available any longer, but I believe that there is a glimmer of a chance that I can source one for the very similar 2-30, which should fit my TL2800F.

If the OEM quest proves to be impossible, I have decided that I will definitely go forward with a home-made ROPS. Compared with my current 'ROPS-less' state and having thought this through from a number of different angles, I simply can't see any possible downside from this unless I were to somehow think that I could operate the tractor more recklessly or in more dangerous conditions with a ROPS attached...and trust me, I won't.

I provided these articles so that some one would not just bolt a structure to their tractor & think that they now have a rops & feel that they are secure & the home made rops fail resulting in a serious injury or death. I also feel that if someone has info.that they should provide it to help others. Because 1 tractor injury or 1 death is 1 too many. Good luck & be safe. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
