Getting a good finish cut is primarily dependent on the tip speed of the blade (the higher the better) and whether the blades are uplift blades and most of the high tip speed blades are uplift blades. When it hits at 200 mph the grass doesn't hardly have time to ask if the blade is real sharp and IF you have it set level to slightly lower at the rear the grass gets cut and mulched. Works well. The Bush Hog Squeeler and Rhino SE-4 are both reasonably priced good quality mowers with a good gurarantee.

Mryan,

Talked to my dealer today and updated the price on the Woods 48" rotary cutter. The price that I gave you before he said was good for last year. This year's price is $595 and he said that the price was good until fall. He said that list on this mower is $880 and it weighs in at 440 lbs.
Said that it was standard quality, not light duty. Also that there was only one quality level in Woods 48" line, when you go to 60" you can get heavier duty. Sorry, don't know if this had a slip clutch or not but based on your price, I doubt if this has the slip clutch./w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Good Luck, JimBinMI

Y'all saved me from recking my equipment again. I have a Bush Hog 280 heavy duty brush cutter and have never messed with the slip clutch. My last brush cutter had a shear bolt. Anyway, I have gone over some really rough stuff and have never hear the clutch slip. Guess that should have alerted me. I be out there first thing this morning working on it. Again, thanks to those in the know!

JimB, $550 sounds like a great price for the Woods cutter, just got a comparable quote from easternfarmmachinery.com for a Thrifty 48" cutter. Anyone ever used one of these? I'm uneasy about mail-ordering a cutter I've never seen or heard of, but equally unhappy to pay a lot more at the local list-price dealers. Jim A

Whoops, meant $595, but even that is still not much more than the no-name cutter. Jim A.

Myron, I paid $550 for Bush Hog Squealer 480 (4ft) but that was six years ago. A $1000 or more seems out of line for a 4' cutter. I did have a piece of angle iron welded around the bottom edge to reinforce it - have the habit of backing into immovable objects.

I finally found a good price!!/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif I called several Woods dealers in MA and RI. Most quoted the same $950. I talked to a guy in Spencer MA (Klem's) and he said $599. That is right in line with JimBinMI's quote. I was shocked at a $350 difference and asked him to check his figures and the model #. He laughed and said that because he does a lot of business with Woods, he gets 20% off the top. He also said that $950 is about retail. I'll ask my local dealer if he can match that, otherwise I'll be making the 2 hour drive to Spencer. Thanks to everyone for the input, you saved me $350!! /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif/w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
