Put the big hammers away. Disassemble the u-joint cross from the gearbox yoke and use a puller to remove the yoke. Or, if the input shaft is broken from the gearbox, put the broken shaft and yoke in a press and push the shaft from the yoke.

If I understand the situation correctly - that the yoke he's taking off is junk anyway, I'd be reaching for the torch myself.

I'd wrap the gear box and shaft with some wet rags first, then go at the yoke fast and hard - if the yoke is loose on the shaft, and you can get the heat to it fast, you can get a lot of heat in the yoke before the shaft starts to heat up significantly, so just burn it right off. Messy, but quick. If you find it's taking too long and the shaft is heating - stop, cool everything off, then go at it again.

You're likely to more damage to the gearbox hammering on the yoke than using the torch IMO...

Why torch it and risk the seal? a die grinder and a chissle will split it easy and no risk to the seal...

earplugs and a good die grinder will be nearly as fast as that torch.. nearly -0- risk to the shaft or seal, and much lighter than lugging a set of bottles..

I can drag the bush hog close enough to get to it with a standard set of hoses, and I'll be drinking cold beer before you're done grinding...

I ran out of gas for the torch one day and needed to get a bearing off of a shaft on a haybine. I hooked it to my pickup truck and hauled to a friend's shop. He looked at it, went to get a drill and a chisel and a hammer and a puller and who knows what else. I grabbed the torch and by the time he got back with half his tools the bearing was lying on the ground in two pieces. The shaft was just barely too warm to touch...

Oh, and I wear hearing protection when I'm using the torch too - that way I can't hear myself screaming when the hot slag drops in my shoe...

You guys ruin all the fun, taking away the hammers...
One of my old neighbors need some serious earplugs when he dropped the slag from an overhead cut, and it went down his pants, burnt a hole in his underwear, and other things.
He screamed over that for weeks. Just gotta be careful with a torch.
Any reason not a let a water hose trickle over those wet rags to extend the available cut time?

My read was the shaft was junk and the yoke is good. Maybe I'm wrong on that.

The way I read it the PTO shaft broke and that needs to be replaced, so the question here is how to get that PTO shaft off the gear box shaft with out doing damage to the gearbox/shaft/seals/etc.

I was thinking the pto shaft was bad, but the gearbox input shaft -may- still be good.
