Rotary cutters - domed or flat back

^ +1 That has a domed upper surface so the rain will run off and is easy to clean, and there's no pockets to hold water. It has a heavy duty tail wheel, and a curved rear deck so you can get close to what you need to. The chain guard is also the only way to go, rubber belting does not work for long.

I made inquiries of the dealers, again, this morning. Considered a cutter with 2" rather than 3" capabilities. Still a herking lot of $$$. I'm going to have to give this purchase more thought.

There are MANY advantages to living in the PNW. However, one of them is NOT freight costs.

Again - thanks to all for you input. Now I have to decide if the cost is justified.

The smooth top cutters have the reinforced frame under the top. In my view I would prefer to have that frame on top. Easier to keep clean. Five foot may be what you are looking for but I would go as wide as my rears. I'm sure your tractor is probably around six foot or so. Just a thought.

Yup, smooth top repels rain but hides frame. If you keep it covered, or live in a relatively dry area like Amber, Washington I think a domed would do fine.

I would go heavy. I have had three bush hog style rotary mowers, a six foot Land Pride, a ten foot Modern Ag and a 15 foot Woods batwing. "Things" get pretty radical, ie; rough and noisy when you are cutting heavy stuff. The Land Pride paint did not hold up too well but over the ten years that I had the mower it worked just fine. The front corners were squared off so to minimize damage from errantly catching a fence post, I welded on some steel angles that I fabbed up. I have not kept up on equipment prices but perhaps Tarter made would be less expensive and still meet your needs?

BTW - I would also recommend a slip clutch on a bush-hog. And be sure it's a slip clutch and not an overrunning clutch. I had one dealer that didn't know the difference and only had overrunning clutches. I made him cancel the entire order.

Make sure to service that slip clutch come spring. I told my neighbor to do so when I sold him my 15ft batwing along with the 108hp Case I pulled it with. That was in the winter. Come spring he thought that he would just do a little with it until he had time to service it. Pretty much destroyed both wing shafts.
