rotary cutting with TC33DA

Not sure if this is normal or not but need some insight from anyone owning a TC33DA. I was out cutting a back pasture last eveing and since the grass was not to high and it was getting close to dark I decided to try and speed things up a bit. I was cutting in 2 gear (middle hydro) and stopped and put it in high, everything was fine until I tried to turn around on a slight incline and suddenly the tractor just stopped. It just would not move at all. I had to put it back in 2nd. before I could continue. I'm pulling a 5' rotary cutter but was surprised when the tractor stalled on me. Is this normal? This is my first tractor with a hydro tranny and never had a problem with my gear tractors in the past. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I have a TC25D. Your experience sounds normal to me.

I have a TC40DA and thought something was wrong when I first got it. I was moving some material and stalled on a small incline, just like you. Now, 95% of the time, I'm in range I (I only have two choices), using high range for moving quickly to the job. I wouldn't go back to gears, especially for mowing our hilly pastures. I can go as fast as I like and still get a good cut.

I have a TC33D with a 5' rotary cutter. I don't believe I've ever ran above range II using it mostly because my ground just isn't that smooth. I know going up a steep incline I need to keep it in range II, but would have thought in range III above 2,500 rpms on the flat it would be ok, but I haven’t tried this.

Slow down when turning by letting off on the pedal, not slowing the engine. Its just like speeding up with a load while in high gear. Depress the pedal slowly and your OK - fast and you'll stall.

III will only work on flat ground with no load on the engine. Cut in II , sometimes I use I on steep hills.

Good advise so far. Are you running the engine at the proper speed for PTO work? Running at a lower RPM will cause you no end of problems.

I agree. I was at a friends house 2 days ago when i saw his neighbor mowing 2' high grass and weeds with some compact ford.. like a 1520.. etc.. and a 4' mower.. he was mowing at IDLE.. stalled it at least 3 times.. mow job looks terrible now 2 days later.. it left a hump down each row where plants were knocked over and not sheared/shredded...
