Rotary Mower Remodel

Nice fix. Even the mock-up looks good :D

Have to wonder why the mfg doesn't cut those corners off and save on steel (or maybe they made some profit on the steel ;) ).

I could have sworn I have seen factory models that were rounded off like this or at least cut off at an angle.

Looks like you did a good job on it there tho dude, I guess the question is did it really help with it digging in?

Many manufacturers do angle or round off the back part - mine's angled. Just not the OPs.

Huge help with it digging in. Those back corners would roll up the sod on 25% of the turns if I left it down (I used to pick it up to turn).

I think I can lower that back wheel and get a closer cut now.

And yes, I think the better RMs are rounded or angled

Nice job! I thought I would share a picture of a remodel I did to an old Bushhog 306.

I was shooting for something like a Brown with a brush bar, but I only had about $700 in this one.

Looks very lethal.... to trees! How big of a tree can you chop down with that thing? Are you able to keep it slightly above the ground with the 3pt, or does it mostly just skid along on the runners?

Well it's a Bushhog 306, and they are rated at 3" but I've kept the clutches loose to allow them slip and prevent over torquing the gearbox. I've cut 5" diameter trees with it. To keep it out of the ground I just tilt the rear up about two inches so if I run through a dip or something the front skids keep the blades from tilling up the ground. Its defiantly a hands on mower and I have to keep one hand on the 3pt lever to raise and lower it as needed, but it works well for what I've got in it. Which is only $700 but I also spent about two full days cutting and welding.

I've been using this inexpensive rotary mover for a few years and got sick of the back corners digging up the sod. Didn't take a real before pic so I did a mock up... I like it so far!
