I got rid of all all the guarding around the gearboxes on every cutter I have owned. Dont need it....NO ONE goes back there with cutter running anyway.

I do leave the PTO shields on, but simply because without a shield, the shaft wraps up with grass and becomes a nightmare to extend/retract. And constantly throws stuff up on the operator

These cheap plastic shields all the manufacturers use these days are a gigantic pain in the tush. Someone could make a little money by fabricating replacement metal shields that had a hinged cover that could be folded up out of the way. That's the way they used to be made. The manufacturers only changed to the plastic junk to save money.

I would use my cordless sawzall and remove the source of the problem.

Well, I am definitely an expert at changing the shear pin now. Spent all day Sunday mowing and busted 5 shear bolts. Went to my local home improvement store and bought me a box of shear bolts. By the time I get done mowing, I am probably gonna find every large rock, brick, tool, and other items that my helper was supposed to make sure was not left in the pastures and grounds. Even ran over an old 100' heavy duty garden hose...not sure how that got there but pretty sure it didn't find its way there on its own!

I had the same conditions on the farm i worked on, a box of pins & most of the time i could use the old nut even though the money wasn't coming out of my pocket.
I finally learned the terrain well enough, plus they had a dozier & backhoe i could use to work the rough areas, every now & then, i'd have a lapse in memory & shear one.
was hogging 80 acres & there weren't to many days that i made it without shearing a pin.
