Rotella oil

Does anyone remember seeing a post on Rotella oil eating into metal with, now not sure but I think, copper content in it? It was a specific problem /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif with a chinese tractor? I like /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif rotella and want to use it. The question was asked in another board and it reminded me to ask the question if it was safe.

I have never heard that,we use alot of Rotella, it gets good grades,and wears very well, in my humble opinion. Dont use the synthetic,just the tried and true 15w-40,good price,good product.-Lloyd

Yes I remember the post. It was only on the chinese tractor, as I remember. I use it in my Yanmar, I don't think there is any problem in any other tractor, other than the one they mentioned, a Jinma I think it was.

Was it really copper? or was it a phosphorous / bronze problem.

I think I've seen bearing shells with copper content?

Whats the real deal here? Any proof that a widely used oil eats copper? If so.. it wouldn't be limited to 'chinese' copper.. etc.. so I tend to think some of the facts are a bit wrong here.

It's false many engines use copper in exposed forms in extremely high pressure 3000+ on some industrial and otr trucks. If an oil eats copper no one would have an engine. I hate to say it but Rotella is a DH-1 oil and is very respectable in it's class. It uses a calcium salo something additive package vs magnesium in delvac 1300. Unsure on delo 400 it's package is.

shady1701--If an engine has Cu (Copper) in the oil I would say you might have a problem with bushing. Might also be from gaskets since some have copper in them. It is a hard call but spend the little $$ and get the oil tested.

You are correct about the Mg (Magnesium) and Ca (Calcuim); however the Mg is usually VERY low. The Zn (zinc) is very high in good oils. That is the base stock you want to protect your motor.

Chinese tractors? Are not all real, good, reliable tractors made overseas? Asian people build better items then the USA..period. (fast and cheaper too)

Look at the cars, TV, Motorcycles, anything. You will not see GM in first place by JD Power.

I work in aerospace and sometime ago we (USA) sent our "worlds" smallest drill overseas. The Japanese sent it back with a hole in it!

I had Fords my complete life but Lexus wins hands down! Quality is 1000X better

From my reading i thought they were refering to the oil actualy eating copper parts up from what they said? That wouldn't make sense due to the wide use of copper.

Shady, I think you read it right the first time. I would not hesitate to use Rotella in anything. I have tried the synthetic as well. I did find it held up easily for much longer than the regular Rotella. I only used the Synthetic though because Wally World had it on sale from $19 a bottle down to $13 a gallon. The regular is soooo much less expensive I cant justify the use of the synthetic. Even Mobil 1 on their web site plainly states that if you are religous about changeing your oil on time their will be LITTLE gain from the use of synthetics. I can't believe ANY major branded oil would desolve ANY heavy metal or no one would have any engines left and we would hear about it from many people. It seems far more likely that water or other contaminents got into the engine of the one in question.....Or some ones just pullin yer leg ! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Dave

Synthetic Rotella=5W-40, Reg Rotella= 15W-40. When the temp drops to -25 here in ND, that makes a big difference in startability, how soon the oil flows to all points in the cold engine, etc. So, for the small cost difference, I choose the Synthetic. And I say small cost difference because I only put on about 150 hrs a year, which = 1 oil change annually, in the fall to keep condensation problems at a minimum.
