"The USA is a service nation now. Yes we could make any item but why would some customer pay more for the same product?"

Well said.
One word - union. Unions have driven up the cost of our labor. Now our workers are spoiled. Now the union bosses are rich. Now labor, and some management positions, are gone to other countries. Now we cry foul. But it's too late to stem the flow.
Steel, rail, auto, textile, air....
All big unionized jobs.
All big losers in the cost/productivity/labor market.
Do these other countries use union labor? I don't think so.

I've heard the drill story also, but when I heard it, it was that we sent the drill to Germany and they sent it back with a hole in it.

Good post Trescrows---I have same thoughts on the reasoning of American business process. Market value drives it all with no intelligent thought to the future of our country, American people(workers), or values which were such a factor in the founding of this country. It is best summed up in the book called "Death of Common Sense".
