It is hydrocracked mineral oil. Better than group II, but not a "true" synthetic.

Possible solution to the smell problem gentlemen, switch to Amsoil. They were some of the original inventors of true synthetic oils, and they still make some of the best. I have run the 15W40 in all my diesels. They also have a 5W40 that meets all the specs, and does not have an odor problem.
