HP wise it should pull a 5' shredder but weight might be a problem. According to tractordata it only lifts about 640 pounds 24" from the pins so considering that a 5 foot BH will be at least 5' from front to back minus the tail wheel, perhaps 500 pounds would be about the max it would be able to handle efficiently. If you get a light duty BH in 5 foot, it may be able to handle it properly.

Considering the weight of around 500 pounds for safe operation (Tractordata lists 640 at 24" behind the pins), if you can find a 5 foot bush hog close to that weight, it should handle it OK. Rule of thumb is 5 HP per foot so HP wise you should be right at the limit. You can always overlap a bit in heavy cover if the engine is stalling a little and still have the full 5 Foot for light cover.

18 pto HP, it should run a 5', UNLESS you have very heavy grass to mow...

I would say a four footer for that machine.I think a five footer would "bog" in anything but light stuff.Also too much weight out the back.
I have a medium duty five ft.Bush_Hog branded BH and believe it to be too much for the BX/1 series JD>

I would also suggest the 4'. This is what I use and would not risk a 5' although I have not tried one.

I have a med. duty 5 ft. on my 2650 which only has about 19 hp. at the pto and it is does fine . I only cut tall grass with mine , I sure wouldn't want to do any more then that . The dealer recommended the 5 ft. for what I was using it for . I did put weights on the front end as I don't have a loader for that tractor .

I wanted one years ago when I had a 2305, which is the older version of your 1026r. When I mentioned 5' my dealer laughed out loud and said heck no, you'll have a hard enough time running a 4' one. Then I found the price for a new one was more than I wanted to spend for one that would get used just once a year.

If you don't want to hire the work out, I'd stick with 4'.

I would like to have one for my 2720 and haven't decided on a 4' or 5' for it but I am leaning towards 4' or continue using the MMM.

I like your wording. The tractor itself is too small for a 5' bushog. Its essentially the equivalent of a Kub BX in size. That is enuf HP for 5' cut, but not enuf tractor to handle that size out back.
