After searching for a used roto tiller with no luck, I have deceided to go with a new one. I bought a BX 25 TLB, sold my Troy Built Pony roto tiller and have gotten a price of $1834.00 list & $1595.00 sale for a Bush Hog RTC48 tiller,
having very little experience with 3ph tillers I am hoping to get some feed back from some of you more experienced operators out here. Is Bush Hog a quality piece and is the $1595.00 a fair price, the dealer is also offering a Bush Hog BBC48 Box Scraper $699.00 list $599.00 sale, appriciate any feed back and opinions
thanks

when I had a BX i bought a land pride rtr 0550 tiller for $1595.00 so that sounds about right to me. this was a few months ago. I dont have any experience with bush hog but it is a major brand so i would think it would be a quality implement.

Good luck.

I bought a BX2350 last year. This March I bought a BushHog 48" 3ph tiller. This is a rebadged Sigma, made in Italy. It is very well built. I paid $1600. I have a small plot (maybe 125 feet by 60 feet) that had been overgrown with box alders and stuff for at least sixty years. A neighbor who does tree work came in, ground up most everything, ground down stumps when necessary, and left a few good trees standing (one elm [!], three soft maples, three locust).

Box alder roots wandered underground everywhere. The soil is clay loam with small-ish stones. I used the tiller back and forth, half-lapping and crossing at ninety degrees, again half-lapping.

The tiller did a remarkable job. We had to rake up small stones and pieces of roots for a while but I am more than satisfied with how the BushHog handled a really rough job. I have no regrets whatever buying this unit. The BX2350 is well matched to a 48" tiller even though Kubota officially recommends something smaller.

Doug,

I don't know how true this is, but I have heard that in clay soil, temperature and moisture changes help cause small stones to move around some and keep the soil slightly more loosened up, whereas removing them allows the super fine particle clay to more easily settle into harder and denser sediment with less aeration for roots.

Again, this is just what I have heard from other people. Perhaps some other members may shed some light on this with their own experience.

Tom H:

Thanks for your comment.

We're a long way from removing all of the stones, spending time mostly on stones that are, say, over one inch in size. I would consider input from others who know more about stone movement in clay loam than I do. I don't intend to remove every stone, just the ones that get in the way.

And I expect more root segments will surface over time.

In April a friend and I hauled three truck loads of horse manure, maybe over four tons. I am combining it with grass clippings, kitchen scraps (no meat or bones), and other organic material. The loader with its Markham tooth bar really works will for mixing and turning. This fall I will incorporate some of the mix into the garden area with the tiller.

Life is easier when you have the right tools to do things.

I would like a new tiller also, but am waiting until I make up my mind to get a larger tractor. As for a spot for a garden, I to have had lots of stumps ground up. I have also for the last few years, had a local tree trimmer, dump his mulch/ schreaded tree limbs etc, at my place, and for two years have been mixing it, once or twice a year, it looks to be getting richer by the month. I did see this tiller set up, at al local dealer, but they want about $2000. for it, boy have prices went up in last two years.

I was talking to a guy from Howard Rotovator the other day. He made some great common sense about avoiding reverse tine tillers unless you have previously worked ground or ground that is free of large stones. He said his tiller will discharge tilled leaf product right at the surface if properly adjusted for easy removal. I think Howard makes one of the best tillers on the market and even though they are not reverse, I think the guy was onto something. The 50" Howard was about $1700 if I recall. The cheapest KKK I find is still about $1600.
