ROTO TILLER FOR BX 25

I have a bush hog tiller for my BX. I love it! Its a 42" and the forward till with slip clutch is great with rocks or roots. When it bangs it baasically throws it out and up for easy picking. It works great to get the soil prepared from scratch and finish smoothing. My father was able to use it as well on his much larger MF tractor and it works fine. I find I really never needed the full PTO speed and the slower pto makes for a nice ride. It doesnt lug the engine either. If I were you, I would get a 48 or 50" if you can. the extra width is nice. With my 42" I had to tighten the turnbuckles so its perfectly centered so it will cover my tire tracks and no slight turning during the till. There is no doubt in my mind that the BX can handle a couple more inches more.

Bought a KK TG48 gear drive with slip clutch for my BX24. It is a heavy beast and I am still amazed at the difference in ease of tilling between my old TroyBilt circa 1973 Horse and the TG48. Tractor Supply gave a 10% discount from $1499. Takes longer to clean it off than to do the actual tilling. Hightly recommended.

The BX never bogged with tiller at 540PTO @3125 engine rpm. Low range, go slowly. I set it slightly down for chopping up sod then lower second pass to till deeper. In previously tilled soil, it just drops down and quietly whips the soil into fines for planting.

I had to install the FEL to balance out the front weight or it pulled the front wheels off the ground when I tilled on a slight upslope. Don't forget front weight. Also start the PTO at idle then raise the throttle and gently ease the tiller down on the ground. So many people just crank up the throttle and then start the PTO. Wrong. I needed to cut the shaft by 1-1/2" on each end.

Has anyone used the reverse tine rotation tillers on the BX, or smaller B's? If so, how do you like it?

I used a land pride rtr 0550 on my bx2200 with no problem at all. It did a great job. After I got rid of the bx2200 for the b3200 I needed a bigger tiller to cover the tire tracks so I traded the rtr 0550 for the land pride rtr 1058. It also does a great job. The only think that I dont like is that is it much heavier and makes it harder for me to lift to set it on the pallet with wheels. I think the reverse tillers do a great job both on new ground and already established gardens. The bx2200 had plenty of power to run the 0550.

Doug,

I don't know how true this is, but I have heard that in clay soil, temperature and moisture changes help cause small stones to move around some and keep the soil slightly more loosened up, whereas removing them allows the super fine particle clay to more easily settle into harder and denser sediment with less aeration for roots.

Again, this is just what I have heard from other people. Perhaps some other members may shed some light on this with their own experience.

For any clay soil (black or red) you will need lots of gypsum to neutralize the clay and ag lime to bring up the PH.

Winter wheat or oilseed radish is a great cover crop and a must to kill weeds and helps with the nitrogen levels.

Adding a 2-3 inch layer of concrete sand and mixing it in helps with everything-weeding, tilling to cultivate and watering.

Ideally you want to mix in a lot of gypsum first to at least break down the clay quickly- the big issue strictly depends on how thick the clay layer is that will be your biggest issue as no amount of aeration will get rid of it.

Adding the sand and then planting a winter cover crop like winter wheat or rye will do wonders.

I did see this tiller set up, at al local dealer, but they want about $2000. for it, boy have prices went up in last two years.

I'd love to know what that seat is. It looks like it has a storage compartment. Clever.

I have a LP tiller I use on my B2320 sometimes, its a pain to use because of the clutch. Every single time I to use it I have reset the clutch plates and adjust it until it just catches. Its not the easiest to adjust, and if I don't set it correctly, it just bogs the engine down and doesn't slip, even after setting it to slip.

I really wish I'd spent $2k on another tiller.

All BX2660's have that seat. It reclines, too! I love it on those long mowing nights. They call it a glove box, and suprisingly, mine never gets water in it when I pressure wash my tractor. It is sized more to hold the owner's manuals ar a pair of flat gloves. It's handy.
