rototiller and pto power

...First post from a long time reader. It was with the Forum's help that I purchased a TC-30 hst last fall. Now I'm looking at tillers and the spec sheet on the 60 in KingKutter that I want calls for 25 hp @ pto minimun. Can I pull it off with the 24 hp listed for my Blue Beauty? The soil isn't heavy and I'll only be working 5 acres...Anyone with real life experience?

My cousin has a TC29D and uses a Bush Hog 62" tiller. I think you'll be quite happy with the 60" tiller on the TC30.

I agree with Bird, my last rig was rated at 25 HP and it handled my 60" tiller with no sweat.

My 1630 has 23.5 HP at the pto. Last year I tilled a 40 acre field with a sixty inch King Kutter tiller. It worked fine, however this year I purchased a larger tractor to facilitate doing the job a little faster. For most jobs you will find your tractor more than adequate.

40 acres and a tiller? What ever happened to a good old 2 bottom plow and a disk? I would think it might be a lot faster for that much land.

That is because there was no two bottom plow and no disc. With the larger tractor now, will be looking for a three bottom plow. In addition, the tiller leaves behind such a nice seed bed that it is hard to beat. It sure did get old after 60 hours to finish the job.

I run a Caroni 56" on my TC24 (PTO 18.5hp) w/o a problem. I used it last year to till my garden most of which had been broken previously. However, even in the spot that hadnt there wasnt a problem. The only slow down was caused by having to dismount to pull out numerous big rocks.

I have a 50" tiller on my litlle bitty 455 and it handles it fine. Actually kicks butt. In sod I have a hard time holding the tractor back some times. 22hp engine rated power. Not sure what the PTO HP is.

P.S. I can travel faster than the tiller is effective most times and we are in heavy clay here.

We use a 60" tiller all the time and it seem to work fine (well it does for a bit); however, it comes with a price tag.....And a similar one for at least two of us who use our boomers in vineyards. When you abuse the tractor a bit it is OK, but use them hard for a couple of seasons (about 750 hours for us) and the pto goes south for the winter, that little experience is easy to fix, and comes with a $1,100.00 price tag.....
So, if it is light occassional use I'd say OK, but use it hard and there is a cost down the road.

While most here won't put the kind of hours on their boomers that we do it still adds up.

The last time we dropped a boomer off for this little operation the mechanic cheerfully chimed in that he'd see us in 700 hrs.

I bought a higher HP tractor to abuse and don't have the problem.

I've been using a 72" KK tiller behind a 30PTO horse tractor for 6 years in heavy soil with great success. If you have HST you'll have no problems. Breaking new ground I need to creep pretty slow. I've literally done dozens of acres in the past 6 years.
