My 1982 TroyBilt rototiller stipulates 30W non-detergent in the gear box.

Nancy - those pictures look just like the Honda engine on my generator. One fill hole/with plug on each side of the engine and the drain hole with its little square plug. I fill until the oil is right at the top of the fill hole.

The manual which came with my 1978 Troy-Bilt Horse II calls for 140 or 90 grade in the transmission. On the other hand, the copyright date on the manual is 1991, so it may be a late revision. 30 oil seems pretty light for the bronze gears in there, though.

My bad - I checked the Owners Manual. 30W non-detergent in the engine. 90/140 weight in the transmission/gear box.

So, the front orange cap is for engine oil, 30w hd is what I put in last week. Need I be concerned about checking oil for the gear box also?

Yes - check the gear box also. The fill plug just might also have a small dip stick attached.
