How much HP required to run a 4x5 baler?

Sweet is correct, in that about 45-50hp is minimum for a 4x5. But, 45hp won't really make it "hum." My 85hp tractor is adequate, but not overpowered, for my 4x5. Most folks, that I know, are running that size baler behind a 75-100hp tractor.

If a using a 4x5 NH and baling much hay during a day you will need atleast 60 hp

On the sileage special: Does this have a negative effect on a round bale if it isn't a sileage bale? In other words, A s/s is fine for ordinary hay?
From what I read it's just a beefed-up baler that can bale "junk", too.

You can bale grass with it also the only difference is it lets you bale with a little higher moister content but not green hay

Neighbour has an NH 644 Sileage special, does not bale sileage with it. Says it is heavier built, bearings, and a wider pick up auger too.

NH balers didn't have heavier bearings from a regular baler they just was net only and had crop cutters to where the regular baler could have net or twine or both and no crop cutters

Another thing I did not know was that the NH balers are the old Allis Chalmers design, NH bought the patents when AC liquidated.

the NH as the same pickup on a standard baler and a silage special
And from being around Nh equipment all my life (my father was a NH dealer for 25 years) and run them all my life i have never heard that Nh was a copy of a AC baler Since ACGO had bought out the AC stuff and is still in buisness

I have a lot to learn. Looking for recommendations on round balers. New Holland is king around here since they are headquarted about 30 miles away in New Holland PA.

I've looked at a ton of 'em on tractor house. Seems like net wrapping is a big plus.
What do I look for in a 4x4 or 4x5 round baler in terms of price, features, etc?

Around here Vermeer "REBEL" balers 5400&5410,talked awhile with one of the owners and highly recommended it,when I was thinking about getting my own stuff. Bigger balers see alot of the NH. I did bale with a NH,getting it to trip was the only issue I had.But I put off buying hay equipment last year, cause it would have just stayed in barn(no grass)..

the trip problem must have been on a autowrap and 90% of the time what is wrong is some dirt build up or the bushings in the tieing mech pulley needs to be changed they are really a very simple baler

i was told from a very relible source the the NH round balers are based on the old ac balers. maybe nh copied it when the patent ran out. AGCO balers are HESSTON baler, not AC baler, never have been AC.

My source works deep within the AG industry.

AGCO bought out AC i find it hard to believe a NH baler was based off of a AC baler

So bottom line is 62 PTO/70 Engine HP enough to run a round baler on a part time basis?

dad runs a bigger NH (~1500# bales) behind our D17 series 4 or a AC 175(~65 hp for both) without issue. it is not optimum for that baler but it is what we have left after selling the big tractors.:( so you should not have an issues running a smaller bale with the same hp.

Sure. You may not be able to bale as fast as a higher hp tractor, but it'll work. If you find that you're having trouble with the engine "bogging," just catch a lower gear.
