Round bales sticking onto hey spear

Grease wasn't what I wanted to do...but had to try something. This problem is primary in loading bales on a trailer, then pulling back....can't dump them like you describe.

Then pay attention to the spear's angle of attack while backing away, which I also described. Slipplate which Duffster showed is a good product.

I have 2 of those Washburn spears. One for the Bobcat, and one on the tractor FEL. They are great..!!

I wrap my bales pretty tight. Tight enough those large diameter spears would just tip the bale over, when I'd try and stab them.

I even sharpened the end on them a little more. They may have like a 1/4" blunt end. I double stack mine inside, and very rarely have a problem backing away, and the bale sticking. What few times was due to the angle of the dangle... Come out the same angle it went in, and it slips right out.

I highly recommend them..!!

Along my thoughts as well. Sounds like these bales you're moving were baled tighter than a drum.

I've used a large diamter spear like the broken one in the pic on round bales for a long time with no problem piercing them or unloading them.

i have seen that prob before with the big spears, if you were to go to a spear that is tapered most or all of the length of the spear it will help a lot. i think one brand name if i remember correctly is "super spear". i'm sure there are many others. moisture content too high in the hay will also cause the same problem. the tapered spears are also smaller in diameter. i doubt very seriously white grease or graphite in these small amounts would hurt your stock, but i would not use it myself, simply because i wouldnt eat it myself. i try to keep my cows as "clean" as i can. if i had to use comething for lube, i would use some kind of vegetable oil. i have never used any kind of lube on a spear.

What kind of technique are you using to remove the spear? I load trailers all the time and I just put the spear in as near level as I can and then just set the bale on the trailer as level as possible so all the weight is off the spear and back the tractor up.

I would cut that one of and get one off ebay. the spears can be bought with a weld in sleeve. I built my rear spear with two of these (wanted it for lifting seed pallets also). They slide in easy with pushing the bale and the bale doesnt move when pulling out. They have a hardened shaft to allow a smaller diameter. They also have flute or groves cut in them, they looked like giant bayonets

To break a spike like that is ridiculous..We move thousands of bales every year with factory and homemade spikes from old axles etc ..i'd be taking that back to the manufacturer or dealer..?
