Rounded off drain plug

Well, I had a little problem with no drain plug. I got my new flail mower ready. Removed the fill plug and could not see any oil. I put the funnel in and filled the funnel full of oil. Looked back a little later and funnel was still half full of oil. Removed funnel and case is not full. It must have already been half full as needed. So now I need to drain some of it out. There is no other plugs on the case and I do not have a pump. Turned the mower up on end,(it is a ditch bank mower with tilt). After about 30 minutes, I got about 1/2 inch of oil out of it. It is thick and runs real slow. I will have to see a better way to check it in the future. I may just need to turn the pto on and let the oil warm up a little. And there could still be air pockets in the case.

So I may change my vote to just turning the tractor upside down. I know it will work.

How big is the fill plug? After the oil was hot ( probably obtained with another heat source not just running it ) you could probably siphon it out.

After it is hot, I may try a turkey baster. I can wash it and the wife may never know.

I can picture it now. Sucking hot oil up a hose, burned mouth, trip to the ER, week w/o being able to eat. Got smart one day and pulled the plug on a hot crankcase. Good burn on my hand and arm. That was before I perfected my methodology; let it cool below the burn point for one.

Use a clear hose. If you suck oil in your mouth using a clear hose you probably aren’t the sharpest tool in the shed.

Hook this up to your air compressor, drop the tubing into the case and squeeze the trigger to get the siphoning started, pull the tube out when enough has been removed.

Maybe it is just me but I still don't understand how this helps remove the drain plug. :confused3: Maybe it reduces the hydrostatic pressure on its backside?

It doesn’t. But it will start a siphon. It’s the same concept I discovered when I was about 5 by putting 2 straws in a glass and covering the top with my hand. Blowing in one straw would push water out the other straw. Take it easy with the pressure so you don’t blow a seal out.

Called the "venturi effect".

That’s different than what we’re describing. We’re talking about about sticking a hose to the bottom of the fluid in a sealed container and pressurizing the container. The fluid is pushed out the hose. It’s the same way a fire extinguisher or a pump up weed sprayer works.

It was actually invented by Curly Howard. After spraying Moe in the face with it Curly got vice grips on the nose treatment.
It does work, you just have to know where to aim it. The turkey baster works well also, just get one from the dollar store.
A universal fuel pump like this works also, self contained like this using a battery or just clip lead it to a car/tractor battery.20181023_152619.jpeg20181023_152608.jpeg
